Before refrigerators and ice machines existed, the last batches of bottom-fermented beer could only be brewed in March (März) at the latest. It was then cooled with naturally forming ice. To harvest the ice, two processes were commonly implemented. Large blocks of ice were frequently cut from the ice sheets of ponds that were frozen over. They were then stored in the cellars of breweries. The second process is what gave Eiszäpfle (or icicle in English) its name. Large wooden scaffolding was sprayed with water so that icicles would form on the beams. These could then be knocked off and used to cool the beer.

Bottle from Appellation Wines as Rothaus Marzen. Appearance - golden yellow. Thin but attractive slightly off-white lacing. Nose - a little honey and brown bread. Taste - more of the same. Sweet malt notes going into honey and even caramel. Palate - light to medium bodied. Creamy texture. I'd like the finish to be a touch drier, even though I know we're heading into bock territory slightly. Overall - decent.

500ml bottle; as Rothaus Märzen, from Beers of Europe (5.6% ABV): BB 13th May 2021. Drank at home on 16th Jan 2021. Clear golden body, weak and fast fading white topping, lighter in colour than most Märzen I have come across. Grainy nose and taste, hops playing second fiddle in this semi-sweet brew. It lacks a bit of body depth too, not your regular Märzen at all. Expected and hoped for something a bit more interesting and exciting to be honest.

Solid for the style, still has a bit of that dms flavour to me. More like a helles with some off flavor than a Marzen. Kihoskh adventkal 2020

Bottle on 7th December 2020, from Beer52 Advent Calendar. Pours clear rosy pale amber with virtually no foam or lace. Spicy aroma with maltiness and earthy pungency. Earthy and spicy in-mouth with nuttiness - hazelnut. A sweet malty finish with caramel/biscuit maltiness and spices. Plenty of body and a smooth mouthfeel.

330 ml bottle, from Seven Cellars (discovered too late that it is now also available at Vinmonopolet). ABV is 5.6%. Crystal clear golden colour, like a pilsener. Moderate to small white head. Sweetish aroma of light malts, hints of hay, flowers, honey and newmown grass. The flavour is medium sweet, with floral and herbal hops, moderate bitterness.

Bottle online from 'The Trembling Madness'. Label says 'Rothaus Marzen 5.6%'. Pours a clear light golden colour with a large throthy white head. Aromas of grains, hay, grass, straw and white bread. Taste is more of the same notes, malty, with a very subtle hop on the finish. Medium body, smooth slightly oily mouthfeel with a crisp finish. Nice Marzen.

Rothaus Eiszäpfle, Fläschchen von Hopfen & Malz im Wedding. - Tief goldgelb, klar. (3.11.2020.)
