Before refrigerators and ice machines existed, the last batches of bottom-fermented beer could only be brewed in March (März) at the latest. It was then cooled with naturally forming ice. To harvest the ice, two processes were commonly implemented. Large blocks of ice were frequently cut from the ice sheets of ponds that were frozen over. They were then stored in the cellars of breweries. The second process is what gave Eiszäpfle (or icicle in English) its name. Large wooden scaffolding was sprayed with water so that icicles would form on the beams. These could then be knocked off and used to cool the beer.

Bottle from Cork & Cask. Clear golden body with a white head. Steady carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of wet grass and boiled green beans. Flavour of toasted sesame seeds and dried leaves. Thin to medium body with an oily texture. Soft fizz. Toasted and tasty.

Bottle. Clear beautiful gold with a very small white head that disappears in a flash. Aroma of grains, malts and noble hops. Taste of malts, grains, straw, a little bit of honey, minerals and some spicy hops. Moderate bitterness. Strong carbonation. Thumbs up.

Bit of apple and pear too, cream and booze. Certainly not an eisbock, but a märzen. Golden color. Malty aroma with some apple and chalk. Malty with some hoppy and tannine-like bitterness. Grapes. Medium bodied. Slight bitter aftertaste. Decent märzen that doesn’t stand out in any way.

Rothaus Märzen Export. Geel bier met schuim. Smaak is licht bitter hoppig en ietwat zoetzuur. Best aardig bier, niet echt bijzonder.

330ml bottle from V&B Annecy. Pours a clear gold, small receding white head. Aroma is moderately sweet pale malt. Taste is clean, pale malt with a pleasing sweet quality. Low bitterness, fairly light-coloured for a marzen I guess. Ok for what it is.

As Märzen Export, because the retarded RB app just shows aliases as not yet rated when you search for beer. At Bierhaus Rothaus. Clear golden body, lasting white head. Sweetish malty aroma, herbal hoppy touches, nicely balanced. Soft malty taste, light herbal touches, not much bitterness, drinkable enough. Just a generic, well made, slightly stronger German lager. Nothing too exciting and not worth 24 HRK / 0.5l in any universe.
