Altbier ("old beer") is a traditional German ale from the Düsseldorf region, known for its amber to copper color, balanced maltiness (caramel, toast, nuts), and crisp, clean finish from cold conditioning, despite being fermented with top-fermenting ale yeast. It's a hybrid style, fermented warm like an ale but lagered cold, resulting in a smooth, well-attenuated beer with moderate bitterness and subtle floral or spicy hop character, often using noble hops like Spalt or Tettnang.
