Ovila Abbey Quad is heady with aromas of caramel, rich malt, and dark fruit balanced by the spiciness and delicate fruity notes of a traditional Belgian yeast. This complex beer is a collaboration between Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. and the monks of the Abbey of New Clairvaux. It features sugar plums grown on the grounds of the Abbey and harvested by the monks in Vina.

Bottle, 13C. Clear dark brown with a good coat of beige head that lasts in a Westmalle glass. Aroma of plums, prunes, raisins, dough, caramel, banana, cloves. Medium bodied, creamy texture, moderate carbonation. Sweet with red fruits, some banana, brown sugar. Spices (unfortunately) don’t wait until the gently bitter finish. Has nice fruity liveliness but wants for grunt (or for this sort of thing, I suppose that’s lacks majestic presence) underneath. Alcohol well integrated and mostly hidden. Pretty good.

Small caged and corked bottle pours with a dark body that supports a twenty second mocha colored head. The aroma offers up loads of prunes, figs and dates as well as brown sugar, cloves and coriander. The aroma is robust and nearly assaults the senses. The taste is similar with brown sugar and molasses covered dates and plums as well as various yeasty spices. Like the aroma this is pretty up front and in your face. It could use time to blend and mellow a bit. I think this could be rather amazing with some time.

C&C 375 mL bottle from Bruisin Ales. Pours a dark brown color with a thin fizzy light brown head. Good head retention. Aroma of bready malts, brown sugar, spice, caramel, dark fruits. The taste is tart fruits, dark fruits, bread, brown sugar, spice. Medium bodied, slight lingering spice, slight warmth. Nice beer.

375mL bottle, pours a dark mahogany with a small beige head. Aroma of brown sugar, plums and toffee - very well-balanced. Flavour is extremely well-crafted, with notes of plums, toffee, and brown sugar. Low-to-medium sweetness for the style. The plums offer a wonderful element without overtaking. Somehow this is way more elegant than the regular Ovila Quad. Really lovely.

Tap at Stagshead Sierra Nevada night. Pours reddish brown. nice nose of rich malts and dark fruits. tastes of plums, malt, caramel, earth, soy sauce, raisins, and alcohol finish. a touch sticky but pleasant enough
