Dark in color and character, this unfiltered Black IPA exudes caramel and roasted notes while highlighting a bold hop bitterness and citrus aroma. Apollo, centennial, and citra hops intermingle with the deep complexities provided by copious amounts of caramel malts and de-husked roasted barley.

On tap at David Copperfields, Manhattan, New York, NY. A dark brown/black coloured pour with a medium beige head on top. Malty, hoppy aroma. Tastes malty, roasty, bitter, fruity and a little sour. OK but didn’t like the sourness of this pint.

Bottle in NYC at Sander’s apartment. Pours clearish brown with a sturdy, beige head. Big ot pine and mild roast in the aroma, also some burnt wood. Nice flavor, medium sweet with pronounced roasted malts, along with grapefruit bitterness. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Hard and dry roasted malt finish, bitter citrus, some burnt sugar. Lingering gritty bitterness. One of the better Otter Creek beers I’ve had.

Bottle from Carl. Without the "Alpine". Pours very dark brown with a creamy tan head. Aroma is resin to me. With a touch of floral/perfume. Med+ body. Foamy carb. Flavor is initial roast malt with a surge of perfume/floral hop. There’s a lot of competing flavors, but I do not get citrus. Maybe some resin. Definitely bitter in the long finish. Or the short finish for that matter. There is no skimping on ingredients here. Quite nice.

FYI—they brew this year round due to its popularity. Thick black poured that doesn’t show its carbonation. Thin off white head, hovering on the top. Nice lace down my pint. Nose is mostly grapefruit and floral hops. The flavor is some resinous pine and grapefruit hops with a nice chocolate malt to balance it. The hops are not overpowering. A bit of citrus come through when it gets room temp. I really like this and haven’t had anything bad from the Black IPA style. Moderate bitterness toward the finish. Very good. 12 oz bottle $1.95 (with Wild Six discount) purchased @ Julio’s Liquors in Westborough, MA.

(Bottle, Oliver Twist, Stockholm, 4 July 2011) Very dark, almost black in colour, with frothy beige head. Malty, hoppy nose with notes of roasted malt, pine needles, dark bread and dark chocolate. Malty, hoppy taste with roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate and a touch of pine needles in a finish with a fairly short bitterness. Medium body, quite dry. Well balanced and nice.

what a great black ipa. exactly what it should be, a wonderfully delicious balance between the hops and the roasted malts, either a roasty ipa or a hoppy porter, dont know and dont care, this is just a great beer.

Bottled at Oliver Twist, Stockholm. Clear dark brown, brief head. Pungent aroma of black currant, such as from an effervescent tablet. Mid dry with clean, spritzy mouthfeel. Slightly roasty with artifical black currant hpos and salty finish.
