Dark in color and character, this unfiltered Black IPA exudes caramel and roasted notes while highlighting a bold hop bitterness and citrus aroma. Apollo, centennial, and citra hops intermingle with the deep complexities provided by copious amounts of caramel malts and de-husked roasted barley.

Bottle 35,5 cl. Courtesy of yespr. Pours an opaque pitch black with a beige head. Some roast and dried fruit in the nose combined with a little citrusy hops. Medium body, dark malty roast – some malt astringency in there – with a dry and lightly citric hoppiness. Ends bitter. Not the most powerful Black IPA. 050411

dark brown, smooth large light brown head. citrussy and hoppy aroma, slightly flowery, also some roasted malts. flavor is citrussy and flowery, herbal note, faint roasted stuff.

Bottled. An unclear amber beer with a thin beige head. The aroma has notes of hops, malt, and fruits. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, caramel, bread, and fruits, leading to a dry alcoholic finish.

A dark reddish brown IPA with a thin big bubbled moka head. In aroma, very nice green pungeant hops, piney and resinous, nice. In mouth, nutty malt overwhelmed by smooth tobacco notes, good c-hops, lighter than expected but good. Cask at Get Real NY, March 19th 2011, as Double Dry-Hopped Alpine.

Bottle shared by Dmac. Pours black. Tan head. Nose of black and caramel malts and hops. Taste of chocolate malt, hops, light caramel and a dryish pine finish.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a frothy tan head that dies down quickly. Aroma of fresh grassy and herbal hops with a lot of pine, grapefruit and even more pineapple - VERY nice smelling indeed. Medium-bodied; Assertive fresh hop flavour with a lot of grassy and piney hop flavour with a good malt backbone, a little sweetness and a tangy finish. Aftertaste shows mostly of hops with a little malt backbone, a tiny amount of sweetness, but mostly a bitter finish with a distinct grassy note. Overall, a nice Black IPA, showing a lot of hops and perhaps a bit too little complexity and malt. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle pulled from a six pack, purchased at Price Chopper in Lake Placid, New York on 28-January-2011 sampled at home in Washington on 10-March-2011.

Whole Foods, DC six-pack ($9): Pours pretty much as close to black as it can be without being black. There also be a brown head. Aroma is the combination of American hops and roasted malts, which include the notes of some dark roast coffee and really bitter chocolate. Body is not really heavy. The hoppy bitterness is sustained throughout. The finish brings out most of the porter qualities, which linger into the aftertaste, which is quite burnt and roasty. A pretty good bIPA, although in fairness I haven’t had a really bad one yet.

Aroma: The nose is has citrus, pine, roast, chocolate, and caramel notes
Appearance: It pours a brown-black color with a light brown head
Flavor: The taste is fairly balanced some sweetness and bitterness
Palate: The body is light-medium with a fairly soft carbonation and a decent mouthfeel
Overall Impression: Overall, I found this one to be a decent Black IPA with a nice balance and a solid mouthfeel. I've had both good and bad examples of this style, and this one is very much in the middle. A solid beer.

Bottle. Poured a pitch black color with a off-white head. Aroma was sweet malts, fruity hops. Woah, this one was a solid Black IPA/IBA. Crisp citrus, grapefruits, pine hops, sweet malt balance. I’ll be looking for this one again.

Pours black into a shaker. Off-white head with good retention recedes to skim surface. Dark caramel and resin aromas. Sweet and sour pumpernickel upfront turning citrusy in the lasting roasty finish.
