All of us here at Epic are happy to introduce the newest exponential libation—Blue Law Porter. This is a medium-bodied porter to which we added blackberry puree at the end of primary fermentation and finished it with spruce tip extract harvested from Blue Spruce trees found on the grounds of Utah’s State Capitol building. It has a roasting profile with a fruity tartness and an aftertaste of resinous spruce.

Sample at World Of Beer. Dark brown pour with a minimal beige head that dissipates steadily. Short strings of lacing on the glass. Roast malt and coffee in the nose. Light to medium body with a roasty character and flavors of chocolate malt and subtle berry. The finish is mildly bitter with a coffee aftertaste. Slightly above average overall.

Bottle. Clear dark maroon color, thick tan head with good retention and solid lacing. Aroma of lightly sspiced rich dark cocoa with a shot of espresso. Taste is coffee grounds with bitter cocoa and a hint of subtle and sour spice. Tasty.

Bomber from Beer Run. Pours a dark brown color with a large creamy tan head. Fair head retention and nice lacing. Aroma of spruce, chocolate, faint berry notes. The taste is strong tart berries, mild chocolate, mild spruce. A bit of spice. Medium bodied, a little disjointed. Not great, but a nice experiment.

22oz bottle (release #1) from the brewery
Appearance: Pours dark brown with a medium sized beige head and some lacing
Aroma: Roasted coffee, bakers chocolate and dark berries
Taste: Roasted malts, dark roast coffee with a bitter (spruce?) earthy finish
An interesting change from a regular porter, nice.

Bomber from the Brewery. Pours a dark brown, near black color with a medium tan head. An odd nose of spruce, butterscotch and some fruit. The raspberries in the flavor come across more as sweetness, some dry cocoa and coffee, more sweet butterscotch and spruce. Something odd happens with the interaction of spruce, berries and porter. A good beer altogether.
