Bottle at home. Aroma of malt, raisins, caramel, some brown sugar, hint of liquorice. Flavour is sweet with a light bittersweet finish. Body is medium to full, nicely thick mouthfeel. A fairly sweet Doppelbock, but there is a pleasing richness to it.

330ml bottle. Slightly cloudy, auburn colour with average, creamy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, dark beige head. Sweet-ish, caramel malty and minimally toasty, dark malty aroma, hints of malt lozenge, caramel. Taste is sweet-ish, toasty, dark and caramel malty, notes of malt lozenge, caramel, dark caramel, bitter hoppy counterpart. Dissolved sugar enriched, watery texture, smooth, simultaneously slightly dry palate, fine, prickly carbonation. Balanced, not overly complex - quite OK.

Doppelbock by Bronckhorster, with glossy, classy label (as usual with this brewery); longneck bottle from Meldert. Thick and foamy, very regularly shaped, densely knit, pale yellowish beige, pillowy head resting stable on top of a crystal clear, deep mahogany-bronze brown beer with vermillion glow and strings of lively sparkling rising up from the bottom. Aroma of dried plum and dried fig, brown bread crust, bayleaf, clove, red apple peel, sugared black tea, hard caramel, burnt raisins, hints of brown soap, honey-glazed spareribs, liquorice, freshly grated nutmeg, elderberry syrup, molasses bread, light beef stock (4-vinyl guaiacol), chewing gum and sweet cicely. Sweetish onset but in a non-sugary and very malty way, some dried red fruits but low in esters (as befits a Bock of any kind), something vaguely honeyish still but so thin that it does not interfere with this full, slick, rounded brown-bread-crusty maltiness with a sweeter caramelly core, relatively softly carbonated. The malts rule supreme here, shifting from non-sweet caramelliness to downright toasty bitterishness, albeit in a mild and gentle way, not entirely filling the mouth and leaving enough room for that subtle malt sweetness to pass through. Spicy phenols in the finish (clove, nutmeg and, quite pronounced, liquorice) combine with a mildly leafy hop bitter element - but the bitterness, whether from hops or malts, remains altogether soft, cleansing the palate and making room for a thin walnutty effect. The hops do get the last word in the end, though, even if they remain good friends with the malt; some warming, gin-like alcohol is there, but remains very mild and non-disturbing. Toasty malt bitterness and caramelly malt sweetness, spiced by hops and phenols, get the last impression. Very solid as usual from this brewery, very malt-forward but still confidently hopped as well (and actually considerably hoppier than usual for a Doppelbock), with a lovely drying spiciness to it - this is next level Dutch Doppelbock, even bottom-fermented and in that sense clearly seeking connection with the original Bavarian Doppelbock tradition. I was expecting an Eisbock based on the name, but I am not disappointed.

Bottle from Beerwulf. Pours a murky rich mahogany brown colour with a huge foamy beige head. Nice lacing. Aromas of chocolate, coffee, nuts and roasted malts. Taste is much more of the same notes as the aroma with lots of flavour. Medium to full bodied with a smooth slightly oily mouthfeel and a long chocolate, nutty, roasty and also slightly bittersweet finish. The best Dutch bock i have tried yet. Very good
