Too much caramel here. Bit of a sugar bomb. Pours dark cloudy brown, with decent head and lacing. Soft carbonation, booze more than evident. Some oak vestiges but not a lot of things that come together well here. Unbalanced. Bottle.

Bottle, 22oz. As Boatswain HLV Ale. It pours a clear, brown body under a big, off-white head. The aroma has a touch of coffee grit, with roasted malts and some chocolate. Dry, medium-bodied and very soft on the carbonation. Chocolate, roasted malts, some hoppy bitterness and coffee grit in the flavor. Long, bland, roasted finish. Might need some food, certainly didn’t impress on its own. 130808

Dark Brown, Medium Bubbly Head That Does Not Last, Decent Lacing. No distinctive aroma whatsoever. Sweet, chocolate, malt, hop bitter finish with slight alcohol Zing. Although this is one of my favorite styles, this is average at best. Rather dull and forgettable. The only good thing going for it is that hoppy finish. Booze shines too much for the style. Meh.

New rating today: 83 cent can from Trader Joes. Pours orange with a large beige head. Aroma is slightly citrus, spice, vanilla, corn. Taste is floral, somewhat sweet fruit juices, citrus rind, light spice. In a blind taste test, I would not be able to tell you what I had today was an 83 cent can. ----------- Old rating: Bottled as "Boatswain H.L.V. heavy Lift Vessel." Bottle from Trader Joe’s, Charlottesville. Pours a clear brown, frothy head with nice lacing. Smells of wet leaves and sour grapes. Tastes of bubblegum, burnt malts, and sugar. Long lingering alcohol taste that seems like it’s more than 7%.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a thick, three centimetre tall tan head and tints of ruby. Aroma of nuts, sweet raisins, plums and figs, some malt and a bit of nice earthy hops. Medium-bodied; Assertive nutty and malty flavour with a lot of sweetness from caramel, caster sugar and some lighter fruits, all with a good earthy finish. Aftertaste is quite complex with good sugars and maltiness and a surprising tart quality and a bit of a rustic floral flavour too. Overall, a surprisingly good and complex beer for cheap at Trader Joe’s and one definitely worth trying for the price and variance. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Trader Joe’s in Alexandria (Old Town), Virginia on 05-October-2012 for US$1.99 sampled at home in Washington on 16-November-2012.

Bomber from Trader Joe’s Bakersfield labeled Boatswain Heavy Lift Vessel Ale. Nose is pecans, caramel, biscuit, and sweetness. Clear brown with a big, lightly lacing beige head. Flavor is lightly sweet, nutty, and a hint of bitter, smoke, and licorice. Pretty decent brown ale especially considering the buck ninety nine pricepoint!

Pours deep mahogany into a shaker. Off-white head with good retention recedes leaving spot lacing. Dark medicinal and caramel aromas. Soft with bitter herbs and caramel front to back. Lasting bitter medicine finish.
