Black Ale Brewed With Coffee Beans. RED EYE Coffee porter is one of a series of special limited run beers in styles that are more EXTREME or unusual. Porter’s an elusive dark ale that has been constantly changing during its long 300 year history. We figured it was about RIPE for some REINVENTION.

Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. Pours with a tan head and a deep brown body. Aroma of coffee, dirt and nutshells. Taste is espresso, chocolate and brown sugars. Light bubbles. Very well hidden alcohol.

Bottle from Archer Liquors. Pours very brown black with a dark tan head that is huge and sheets like a nito pour. Aroma is lots of coffee backed by mild chocolate. Medium body with mild carbonation. Flavor is coffee with a lot of something like mild chocolate. Not all that bitter. Quite chocolate. Very enjoyable.

22 oz. bottle. Strong coffee smell is first out of the bottle. Pours black and fizzy, with a 1-finger molasses colored head. Thick, dark roasted, sout malt smell under the coffee. Taste is slightly chewy, with some Caribou style coffee in back. Alcohol warmth, dry character. Tannins seem overdone, and I note that 2Bros. does not have a regular stout or porter, this may be why. But all its tastes are big, up-front and stronger as I finish the bottle.

Pours nearly black, with an impressive, soapy lace - aroma of potent coffee, vanilla, anise, and tobacco leaves - low carbonation, smooth, creamy mouthfeel - the intense roast and bitterness of the coffee is offset by a rather high, condensed milk kind of sweetness that is a little too much for my taste - kind of light-bodied for the strength - eventually, the bitterness overpowers the high sweetness, and some of the more complex flavors of the coffee come through - a slight bit of acidic tanginess on the back end, perhaps from the caffeine in the coffee? - the alcohol manifest as a spicy quality in the finish, but aside from that, it’s well-hidden - decent.
