A style I like considerably, bought a 12 oz bottle of Abbey Dubbel the first I saw one since dubbels are so hard to turn up. Pulling the cap before tilting inside of my ABGB snifter. The view is a dense brown body with a here-and-gone skim of taupe foam. I find the nose to be a bit unusual. Dark fruit, malt, ash and earth. Fortunately the drink is an improvement. Ripe plums, malt, toast and a bare touch of caramel. Rather thin for a dubbel. Not bad but far from what I hoped.

Bottle. Pours clear dark amber with a beige head. Stone fruits, plum, bit of Belgian yeast. Not bad overall, but something seems off.

12 ounce bottle. Copper, brown color. Small bubbly beige head. Sweet toasted malt nose has phenolic notes. Sweet fruity malt flavor has yeasty notes. Cocoa, nutty malt middle. Earthy yeastiness in finish, with alcohol warmth. Somewhat pale in comparison to the real Belgian examples. Good nonetheless.

I drink this a decent amount cause my wife likes the beer. So, when I am making a mix 6 and it’s available I throw it in. At this point, I’m rating it in a flight at the brewery. It’s a slightly too sweet and too clean American version, but neither too much. Lots of herbal and phenolic yeastiness counteracting it. It’s a bit much in draft but nice in a bottle that finally made it to a mix-a-six rack after a few months at a store.
Another filtered Belgian ale, without the active yeast just tastes too sweet and thin.
