In this northern German style retro altbier, we’ve dialled down the dry-hops to zero, but cranked up the malt to create massive aromas. Toasty, toffee and floral notes duke it out for supremacy in the headspace of your glass.

When this alt hits your palate, the steely bitterness combines with the rich dry malt and the subtle alcohol warmth in a full throttle attack on your taste buds.

Malts: Carafa, Extra Pale, Munich
Hops: Hersbrucker, Magnum

Appearance is dark brown, hint of ruby, with a beige foamy head which quickly dissipates. Aroma- toffee, bread, sweet malts, sultana, cherry cake. Taste- chocolate, cocoa powder, sweet sugary fruits, toffee and caramel malts, malt loaf, fruitcake, bready finish. Smooth and slightly fluffy mouthfeel. Quite good.

330ml bottle from Brewdog’s online markthalle. Pours clear deep amber with small foamy off-white head. Very light caramel malt aroma. Taste is rather thin and dry. No discernible hop presence. Malts are smooth with some biscuit and toffee. I love a good alt. Camden’s was great. But this doesn’t quite hit the spot.

Bottle from Beers’n’more. Mostly a malt syrup with a crisp carbonization, but well, it’s an alt after all. Very dry, no noticable hops. Not my favourite alt, but not a bad one either.

Bottle at home in London - picked up at Kris Wines. Pours perfectly clear penny copper with a creamy, off-white head. The nose has lightly toasted bread, caramel, berries, cereal. Light-medium sweet flavor with straightforward bready malts, hints of apple, berries, mellow toasted hay, bread, light toffee. Light bodied with average carbonation. Lightly drying on the finish, with further toasty bread, mellow toffee, dried berries, subtle herbal and floral hops, light balancing bitterness. Nicely balanced, very drinkable stuff.

Bottle. Curious Hop, Otley. Clear, dark amber. Film and ring of off white head. Cracknell toffee. Candy sugar. Steeped white grape. Nutty, bready malts. Taste is a weird mix of toffee sweetness and acrid bitterness. The bitterness lingers longest. Not by any means is this a style I’m familiar with, and it’s possibly not one I’m likely to get into. Too nutty and sweet, and jarringly bitter.

Keg at BD CLJ, 22/09/15. Copper to chestnut brown with a decent light beige covering. Nose is biscuit malt, light spice, toffee, whisper of dark fruit. Taste comprises biscuit, toffee, dark malt, light spice, earthy fruit. Medium bodied, light spritzy carbonation, semi drying close. Decent alt, light hop rinse, refreshing palate cleanser amidst some big boys.
