Brewed with a premium barley and northwestern Williamette and Columbus hops, Shelter Pale Ale has a fine malt backbone and a slightly nutty flavor. It's a versatile and quaffable beer.
We named this beer Shelter Pale Ale because we think of a shelter as being a place you come home to. It just made sense for this Dogfish original.
Shelter Pale Ale is available on draft only, available in Delaware. At 5% ABV, Shelter is a great anytime beer.
Admin Note: In 2023, Dogfish Head canned and packaged Shelter Pale Ale as a part of the Continuously Hopped Variety Pack.

Bottled. Fondly remembered from back in the mid. 2000s when I thought 60 minute IPA was a really hoppy beer. Good times.

Rated June 2006. Golden with thin white head. Aroma of crisp fresh grapefruit with a bit of malt. Nice malty flavor followed by a fresh grapefruit bitterness from the hops. Fairly high carbonation works well to bring out the flavor of this ale.

Pours clear golden with a huge frothy white head. Aroma of lemon and pine, some berries. Taste has light woody notes, some wine must, vaguely resinous. Palate has more resin on the nose, viney. Eh.

2 month old can A: Poured clear pale gold with a short, fast falling head. S: Sweetish aroma of pine, orange, toast and caramel. T: Follows the nose with sharp pine and bitter citrus pith keeping toasty caramel malts at bay. Very dry. M: Highly carbonated and with a light airy feel and bone dry finish. Extremely refreshing. O: Flavors are a bit muted and it's maybe overcarbonated but it's right down my alley. I Like it.

I got this in a trade with Wasatch. Thanks, John!
It pours from 12oz bottle a clear gold with a good head of foam that shrinks to a fine broken layer by the end of my session.
The smell is rather delicate. I get a bit of floral hops but that's about it.
The taste has some good malty graininess up front with a touch of bitterness that moves in about midway through and that's, pretty much, the highlight of this APA. I won't mention the "D" word but yeah, it gets overpowering for my taste buds and I'm having a rather tough time drinking this brew. In fact, I can't finish my glass.
Dogfish Head makes some great brews so my not liking this one is neither here or there, if you catch my drift. ;^)

Bottle from Old Town. Pours a hazy gold with a finger of foam that lingers. Grassy hops with some faint citrus and light grain notes. Clean and crisp on the palate with a balanced, albeit slightly dry finish.

DFH really bringing the heat to OBF. No insult intended but come on man! Pours a clear golden color with a medium white head. A nice toast, caramel and citrus nose. The flavor is more of the same, lemons, oranges, some toast earthy malt. Solid pale.
