This is our original and most approachable beer. We got our start back in 1995 brewing this very beer on our teeny, tiny brewing system at Dogfish Head Brewing & Eats in Rehoboth Beach, Del.

Brewed with a premium barley and northwestern Williamette and Columbus hops, Shelter Pale Ale has a fine malt backbone and a slightly nutty flavor. It's a versatile and quaffable beer.

We named this beer Shelter Pale Ale because we think of a shelter as being a place you come home to. It just made sense for this Dogfish original.

Shelter Pale Ale is available on draft only, available in Delaware. At 5% ABV, Shelter is a great anytime beer.

Admin Note: In 2023, Dogfish Head canned and packaged Shelter Pale Ale as a part of the Continuously Hopped Variety Pack.

On draft at the Gaithersburg brew house. Pours a clear gold with a thick white head. Mildly spicy nose. Very thin mouthfeel. Not one of DFHs most memorable brews.

On tap at the Gaithersburg location. Pours a clear orange gold with a white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma is full of grain and bread with just a hint a of backing grassiness. Flavor has a good amount of grain and grassiness with not much else. Bland.

Draft in Gaithersburg. Hazy golden color, small white head, decent lacing. Aroma of citrus, hay, white pepper. Taste starts with decent hoppy bitterness then peters out toward the finish.

Location: Somehow I haven't rated this before, I've had it a few times, just drank one at Blue (fish place in Rehoboth) with diner on 7/3/09

Aroma: Nice simple balanced nose, floral and citrus hops, caramel, honey.
Appearance: A nice looking copper-red color.
Flavor: Pretty solid flavor, a nice (if a little light) hoppiness to it, that is well-balance by the caramel malts.
Palate: Highly drinkable, nice mouthfeel, lightish body
Overall Impression: It's a pretty nice example of the APA style. If you are expecting a big beer, Dogfish makes PLENTY of those. If you are looking for a really solid APA with some nice flavor, you'd probably enjoy this beer.

Pours a nice white head ( if you pour it right, so I don’t know what the dude before me is really complaining about). And has a nice amber color to it. However, there is nothing to write home about in the aroma of the beer... rather typical. Taste is of Earthy malts and a little bit of hops on top of that. Rather nicely balanced and fairly drinkable although there is many a better beer out there.

Filtered and slightly darker than pale ale or lager. More like pale orange with a tea-froth head. Expecting a lighter ale for some reason, you know, shelter. Very nice light bready aroma. Initially, somewhat like an APA. However, as the session continues there is a leaning toward IPA. Citrus bite develops and becomes somewhat interesting. Decent ’around the tongue’ fizz continues through-out. Lighter to medium ale attributes roll on. Finish is almost an annoying linger.
