This is our original and most approachable beer. We got our start back in 1995 brewing this very beer on our teeny, tiny brewing system at Dogfish Head Brewing & Eats in Rehoboth Beach, Del.
Brewed with a premium barley and northwestern Williamette and Columbus hops, Shelter Pale Ale has a fine malt backbone and a slightly nutty flavor. It's a versatile and quaffable beer.
We named this beer Shelter Pale Ale because we think of a shelter as being a place you come home to. It just made sense for this Dogfish original.
Shelter Pale Ale is available on draft only, available in Delaware. At 5% ABV, Shelter is a great anytime beer.
Admin Note: In 2023, Dogfish Head canned and packaged Shelter Pale Ale as a part of the Continuously Hopped Variety Pack.

Medium amber color with a slight white head. Aroma is cat p---, citrus - must be Columbus - . Medium body with near creamy carbonation. Flavor is all hop. Could be a little bread in there. It finishes bitter - not like a DIPA, but really bitter. It’s a great APA. Could drink this all day.

Bottle at Brickseller, Washington DC
Hazy amber color. I didn’t expect such a poor, common beer by DFH, with paper aroma nad dry mouthfeel, and astringent.

No noticeable aroma. Golden color, thick off white head. Caramel taste, watery mouthfeel. Weak but nice hop and coffee finish. Rather drab.

Bottle. This goes down easy, and is pleasant, but nothing more. Pours apple juice colored w/ white head and good lacing. Hoppy taste at the front of the tongue. Kinda thin taste.

12 oz bottle...pours a light copper, thin layer of foam, that doesn’t hang around...clean and easy to drink..well balanced and a slight stickiness wrapped up in a mildly creamy body

bottle - Pours cloudy with fine yeast suspended in the copper colored body and topped by a thin, white head. It smells of yeast and citrus hops. The rather light taste has mild malts and moderate levels of hops. This one is medium bodied and has a light, hoppy finish.

Bottle courtesy of Beerandblues2: Poured a light clear amber color ale with a nice big foamy head with average retention. Aroma of light hops and weak caramel malt. Taste is a mix between some caramel malt with a light bitter finish. Body is a bit watery with medium carbonation. I never thought I would end up saying this about a Dogfish beer but this one is seriously lacking character.

Bottled. I think I may have found the "gateway" beer to bring the Bud boys into the world of DFH. This is a fairly standard brew, nice though it is. Has a nice beer smell when opened, but with a touch of oxidation (may be close to pull date). A photogenic brown beer body with a thin head. Taste is mostly those nice toasty malts. English type hops show up at first, with a trace of Northwest hops at the back of the throat. A good beer that suffers when being rasted in the same category as hop monsters like Alpha King.

Decent size head on this clear/orange pale ale. Aroma was a bit weak, had citrus and some malt notes. Flavor was weak as well, very thin. Had very mild hop notes in it, some sweet malts as well. Finish was non existant. Pretty sad pale ale, especially coming from DFH.

Pours gold into a shaker. Medium carbonation. Very little aroma -- malt. Medium malt flavor with lingering bitter finish. A little fizzy and fairly well-balanced.
