This is our original and most approachable beer. We got our start back in 1995 brewing this very beer on our teeny, tiny brewing system at Dogfish Head Brewing & Eats in Rehoboth Beach, Del.

Brewed with a premium barley and northwestern Williamette and Columbus hops, Shelter Pale Ale has a fine malt backbone and a slightly nutty flavor. It's a versatile and quaffable beer.

We named this beer Shelter Pale Ale because we think of a shelter as being a place you come home to. It just made sense for this Dogfish original.

Shelter Pale Ale is available on draft only, available in Delaware. At 5% ABV, Shelter is a great anytime beer.

Admin Note: In 2023, Dogfish Head canned and packaged Shelter Pale Ale as a part of the Continuously Hopped Variety Pack.

This is a great brewer but this beer makes a poor flagship. It is at best a mediocre APA. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a bronze color with a medium sized yellow-white head. The aroma is floral hops and is a bit medicinal. The flavor is dry and nutty with noticeable floral hops and a dry crisp finish.

12 oz. Golden copper color, with a thick foamy head. Hoppy flavor with a malty kick. Pretty smooth, with not a rough finish

Amber color with a white head. Taste has a smokey touch. An acceptable beer, but dogfish has done much better before.

12oz bottle-pours a huge off white head. Color is gold. Aroma-hops & grain. Taste follows with what seems to be a balanced hops & grain but the taste is not. Also has earthy tones, alcohol. Not an especially memorable beer.

Bottle Pours a hazy light goldne amber witha modest white head and nice heavy lacing. Aroma mainly of light sweet malts, apricots and citrus zest. Flavor is pleasant but bland. Easy on the hops, light grains, slightly chalky feel, and a modest body. Slightly bitter trailer. Plain and quaffable.

Dark orange body with wispy white head. Aroma of malts and grain, mainly cereal. Just a hint of hops in the nose. Flavor follows the aroma, though the hops are a little more forward. An average, unremarkable craft beer.

Clear orange golden color, short white head. Aroma is sweet, quite hoppy, some undefined vegetable, though quite typical APA i think. Slight sweet and bitter taste, nicely balanced. Full bodied palate, bit sharp though.

(Bottle 35,5 cl) Dogfish Head may best be known for it’s "extreme" beers, but fortunately they also make more accessible beers like this Pale Ale, which they call their flagship. Beautiful orangey golden, unfiltered with a small, dense head. Very soft, malty character with a nutty touch and a bit of sweetness. Has the typical fruity ale character, and even though the hops are prominent, they don’t bite as hard as in an IPA. and 280306

Golden amber with not much of a head. Smells coppery, not sweet or hoppy as I had expected. Flavor is coppery and very thin. Not what I expected at all. Has a slightly funked malty flavor that’s just not good. I mean, it’s not a bad beer, it’s drinkable, but nothing to ever mention to anyone. The worst offering from Dogfish I’ve had to date... and the only one that i really would have no urge to resample.

Pretty good Pale. Nicely mixed hops add to flavor which has a subtle evergreen undertone which is quite unique.
