A few times a year, we will cut Dan loose to brew whatever he chooses, uncensored, uncut, unplugged. Always handcrafted, this beer is brewed for the adventurous soul. This is a very limited edition and we make no promises to ever brew this style again.

A bold rich smoky nose is created naturally with a blend of smoked malts from Bamberg, Germany and Chilton, Wisconsin as well as robust Wisconsin Rye. Special Ale yeast ferments this hazy deep amber brew in the bottle. This is a big smoked beer fermented with Turbinado sugar and appropriate for sipping slowly today.

12 ounce bottle courtesy of TheGuy. Not just any guy, THE guy. What a guy. Thanks Chuck! Opened 6/23/11. Pours a clear brownish color with a medium creamy offwhite head. Decent head retention and lacing. Big smoky aroma. Really smoky. Smoke fruity notes and caramel as well, and I THINK a bit of a rye bite when I really look for it. The taste is also intensely smoky. Hickory, burnt wood, some rye notes are more present here, along with a bit of stone fruits. Medium bodied. This is not accented with smoke. This hits you across the face. Good thing I FINALLY got over my dislike of smoked beers. Not loving this one, as it is a bit too smoky for my taste, but still a good beer.

Tasted from bottle. At DLD ’11. Slightly reddish brown pour from the very bottom of the bottle. No yeast in the nose, but there’s that fine Gouda cheese rind. Compares well to a Bamberg smoked beer, a little lighter. I only catch a little bit of the rye, much more forward on smoke, and one of the few American iterations that makes the grade.

Clear light ruby - zero head - lovely woodsmoke aroma, with some caramelized sugars - smooth, almost lager-like body - medium sweet and mildly acidic - moderately smokey and earthy - toasted marshmallows and campfire - lingering smoke and acidity in the finish, with spicy and nearly sur rye flavor - good, but I was still expecting more from this brewer.

Purchased at Breeze Thru in Milwaukee, WI; enjoyed on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend before a BBQ. Appearance a slightly cloudy dark amber with a very thin and almost non-existent white head. Aroma of ash, smoked malt, burnt wood, practically like a camp fire. Taste is also like a camp fire, huge smoked malt / ash flavor, also hints of bacon, a sweetness that is somewhat like honey, and also very slightly bready in the back end. Carbonation is good, really this may be the perfect beer to kick off a BBQ. Also, this may be the most easy drinking smoked ale I’ve had to date.

Bottle from Festival Foods in La Crosse. The beer is a clear deep amber color with a medium off-white head that diminishes steadily. Stringy lacing on the glass. Very smoky aroma with notes of malt and ham. Medium body with a smoked malt character that doesn’t go too far into bacon territory. Some sweetness and rye bread notes as well. The finish is smoky with a malt aftertaste. Above average overall.

As others have said, this is kind of a thin beer. Pours a nice deep amber, but with little to no head. Smoky aroma overpowers most other scent notes. The flavor is interesting, though perhaps the smoke could be toned down here as well: there’s some sweetness and the rye flavor is also noticeable. But above all else, there’s that smoke flavor, which is just this side of overpowering. Definitely worth a try, but not one of their best experiments.

12oz bottle. Filtered looking amber-brown. Smoky aroma, very Bamberg. Some sugary gingerbread tones as well. Sort of an awkward beer. I’m a big smoked beer fan, and this does have some nice smokiness, but the Turbinado sugar sort of makes it a little excessively sweet. Maybe it’s the Rye and the Smoked malt. Minimal to no hop character, lots of sweet tones competing. Sort of like if you mixed a Schlenkerla with a Raison De Etre. I’d love to see this beer done with a Lager yeast.
