Bottle - Molasses and dark fruit. Deep jet brown with a decent light brown head. Burnt chocolate and malts with a lingering bitterness. No IPA here.

Bottle @ home picked up at Wilbur’s Foco. Pours a deep brown/black appearance with a brown head without much retention. Weird bready, tangy, burnt, ashy, herbal, sort of spicy, unpleasant aroma. Bitter, burnt roasty, coffee, ashy/smoky, herbal, slight veggie flavor. Gross.

Bottle - pour looks like cola - seems more like a dry, hoppy porter than a black IPA - thin body, watery texture and finish - some dry mineral notes - a fair amount of roast - herbal, woody hops - a bit of a metallic note in the finish - meh.

Bomber from Bruisin’ Ales. Pours dark brown with a creamish beige head. Nice hoppy aroma. Resin? Some underlying burnt malt. Med minus body. Flavor seems resin to me, but the burnt malt renders that uncertain for me. Anyway, there are two sources of bitter - hops/malt - and it finishes pretty dry and quite bitter. I’m thinking this is way underrated. Maybe it should be relabeled as a hoppy stout. :)

An uninspired example in a category that almost always underwhelms. +++ Sampled on draft at D’s in Monroeville this beer poured a black color with a large soapy tan head that left great lacing. The aroma was dryish with a fairly strong floral and perfumey hop presence. The flavor was dryish and bitter with rough floral and perfumey hops and a touch of anise. The finish was medium length roughly hoppy. Medium body. Eh.

Bomber from Woodman’s West Madison. Pours a dark reddish brown with a large frothy tan head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of bitter hops, apples and faint roasted malts. The taste is very bitter hops, roasted malts, a tar-like note. Medium bodied. Off-balance.

22oz bomber shared by CaptainCougar. Brown, thin oily head. Not bad for a Sprecher. The chocolate tones smooth out and cover up the house off flavors. Rather sessionable, not much behind the bitter chocolate and hop tones. Drinkable indeed, a go to beer from Sprecher. Dry and well executed enough, sort of one-dimensional for the style though.

Bottle at CaptainCougar’s local tasting, thanks! Dark clear brown, large tan head. Aroma of charcoal. Taste is burnt toast. Not bad.
