(Re-rate, draught at St. Urho’s Pub Portteripäivät’13) The beer poured almost black. Its head was dense, medium sized and almost white. Aroma had roasted malts, sweetness and chocolate. Palate was full bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were roasted malts, hops, fruitiness and bitterness. Afteraste was roasty, hoppy and bitter. A nice hoppy and roasty brew.

Small brown lasting head. Opaque black body. Sweet perfumy licorice aroma with roasty malty notes. Dry-sweet dusty licorice taste with delicate peppery hop notes. Sooty, with spicy hops. Slightly watery, but with excellent depth for such a light beer. Delicately harmonic and balanced. Very nice! (0.5l draft at Bishop’s Arms, Avenyn, Göteborg.)

Black color; creamy head. The aroma mixes well the chocolate, the roasted malt and the hops; and the choice of yeast gives it a fresh touch. It has a good body, and a good flavor based on the chocolate, with roasted malt tones and a good hopping. The final has strong roasted malt, some sourness and liquorice. Too much roasted malt for my personal liking, but undoubtly a good beer.

Black color, creamy head. Imagine the malt profile of a Mild, with a much bolder bitterness, of good quality, leaving aromatic traces both in the aroma and flavor.

Draught @ Bishop’s Arms, Malmö. Pours a black color with a longlasting tan head. Sweet roasted malty aroma with some hints of chocolate. Sweet malty roasted chocolate flavor with some weak hints of coffee. Long roasted finish with a bitter aftertaste.

(Draught at Akkurat, Stockholm, 8 Dec) Pitch black colour with creamy, firm, pale brown head. Roasted, creamy, nose with black coffee, dark chocolate and hints of blueberries. Roasted taste with dark bitter chocolate, strong black coffee, blueberries and crowberries. Dry finish, loaded with citrussy hops. Oh dear! This is what a stout should be like. Or is it a porter? It’s dry as a stout but with the nice dark berry character of a porter. Well, who cares? Whatever it is, it’s brilliant.

Bottled. Opaque black, not much head. Strong aroma of expresso coffee and dark chocolate. Cold coffee flavor, easy to drink, a bit carbonated and roasty in the finish. Good balanced porter.

(Bottle at Haket in Gothenburg) As Närke Vintermörker. Surprising minty scent, burnt coffee taste with sweet chewing gum after taste. Nice mouth feel. Black color. Yellow-brown head, gone in seconds above dark brown beer with yellow sidelights. Very coffeeish nose, sweet and bitter, gingerbread soaked in the morning coffee. Dry-grainy and roasted taste of stark black, cold coffee. Caramel, Haagse Hopjes in the background. Taint of stout acidity. Slightly syrupy, very slick. Medium bodied, bit burning feel. A porter with an interesting name.

Draught at Akkurat, Stockholm. Black. Aroma of grapefruit and licorice. Medium sweet with rich, dense malty body. Plenty of coffee and chocolate, perhaps a hint of molasses. The bitterness is marked but gentle. Hearty and very well balanced.

At this point I dub Närke Kulturbryggeri the best microbrewery in Scandinavia currently. It’s just a shame that their beer is so awkward to find.
