Royal Pippin is a fruity cider crafted entirely from Albemarle Pippins. It is a dry cider that has a champagne-like quality. It is an excellent accompaniment to many foods, and is a delightfully refreshing beverage on its own. The virtues of this apple are described on the back label:

The Albemarle Pippin is a legendary central Virginia fruit. First imported to England by Benjamin Franklin, the Pippin is recognized as one of the world's greatest dessert apples. It became Queen Victoria's favorite apple when American Ambassador, Andrew Stevenson, presented a basket of apples to the court from Enniscorthy, his wife's Albemarle County home. It is one of the few apples that produces an excellent single-variety cider. Thomas Jefferson grew large quantities for consumption at Monticello and wrote from Paris in 1785, "They have no apples here to compare with our...Pippin."

From a tasting flight at Albemarle CiderWorks. Poured a clear, very pale, almost clear yellow color with no head at all. Light carbonation running up from the bottom of the glass. Aroma was light tart apples, very light Perrier, mineral water notes. Very mild tartness, very light sweetness comes through in this one.

Refrigerated 75 cl bottle, 8.5% abv, poured into a white wine glass. Pours clear extremely pale yellow (almost clear) with small white head which dissipates fairly quickly. Very light dry apple aroma (almost devoid of aroma), light body, light carbonation, and litttle lacing. Taste is vinous (white wine), lighter tart apple, and dryer finish. Might like this if you like dry ciders, alcohol is well covered, but regardless the aroma is really bland.

Dry apple aroma, funky, a bit too much on the rubber side for me. Crystal clear, very pale yellow, some carbonation. Very dry, with the same rubbery quality, lightly tart, not quite medicinal, but very phenolic. The story on the label is fascinating, but this cider is too dry for my tastes. I’m guessing this is an acquired taste that I haven’t yet acquired. This cider cider is helping me get it.

750 ml bottle courtesy of Linda (thanks!), shared with Shukhrat from Uzbekistan. Crystal clear gold, hi carbonation. Aroma has intense fruit, plus apple skins and lemon peel. Taste has a barely sweet start, then turns slightly tart, then finishes very dry. Very nice fruit flavor, and very refreshing. Probably the best American cider I have had - reminds me of my time exploring Normandy and Brittany.

750 mL bottle from the cidery. Pours a very pale yellow color with a fizzy head. Lots of carbonation on the sides of the glass. Very dry apple aroma, wine like, with just a bit of a sweet hint in the finish. Taste is very, very dry and somewhat tart apples with notes of fresh peaches and plums. Medium bodied. Very light, delicate cider. Very good.
