The Belgian-Scotch brewing connection dates to WWI, when thousands of Scotsmen spent years in Belgium. To satisfy the new customers, Belgian brewers learned to brew lighter "Scotch" style ales. This fine Ommegang ale uses heather tips and a wee bit of smoked malt to bring the taste and aroma of Scotland to the forefront. "Malty, full body, dark, slightly smoky, with heather notes. Flavorful and aromatic, with a gentle complexity and easy-going finish."

750ml bottle split with Ann. Deep cherry brown, unfiltered. Big fluffy beige head eventually settles down to a thin, steady layer. Sweet. rich, chocolate caramel aroma. Very well balanced, with just a hint of bitterness that perfectly complements the malt tones. Fluffy mouthfeel. Quality.

Location: 750 ml bottle from Buy Rite - Jersey City, 2/3/11
Aroma: A fairly subtle nose with light spice notes, caramel, mild smoke, and toasty malts
Appearance: It pours an unclear brownish color, slight red hue, foamy beige head, light lace
Flavor: The taste is malty with a medium plus sweetness and a slight acidic bitterness
Palate: It has a medium-full body with a tingly mouthfeel and above average carbonation
Overall Impression: Overall, this beer is alright. For my tastes it was solid but not great. An interesting experiment, but it just didn't totally work. The Belgian malts combined with the Scotch notes are interesting in my opinion. The flavor is a little odd too, with sort of a tangy acidic feel along with the light smokiness, spice, and malty flavors. Again, it isn't bad, I'm just not sure if this one is for me.

C&C 750 mL bottle from Wine Warehouse in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a dark ruby red color with a large fizzy than head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of caramel and peat primarily with some toffee and very faint floral notes. The taste is peat smoke, toffee, caramel, and no sign really at all of the heather. A faint bit of roast and nuttiness. Fairly smoky overall. Medium bodied. Decent.

Draft. Clear, brown body. Off-white, fizzy head. Aroma is malty with caramel, a bit of roast and peat along with hints of grass and banana. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly to moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, velvety texture and moderate carbonation. Sweet and peaty like a Scotch ale with a clear Ommegang/Belgian influence.

Bottle (bottled on 08/02/10 with a best before of 08/2012). Pours with a large off-white head over a hazy deep brown body with some reddish highlights. Good retention. Very nice Belgian lace. Aromas of belgian yeast esters, pine/spruce, smoked malt, cardamon, caramel, bitter/dry orange-peel, light smoke, and some grassy notes. Some light maple as well. Flavors of smoke, clotted cream, caramel, hay, peat, some bitterness, lightly metallic, with belgian yeast notes. Creamy carbonation. Good, but not amazing. I haven’t had many Belgian-Scotch ales that I have liked.

750 c&c shared by Marcus. Pours brilliant clear garnet with a 4 finger creamy beige head. Heavy red roast malt aroma. Full bodied/forthy,bubbly carb. Flavor is lightly smoked and there’s a firm herb/veg aspect. Very fresh flavors. Much like I’d expect from Belgians producing scotch ale. Quite nice Smoke gets stronger with time.

Draft: Pronounced raisin and fig nose. Opaque brown, medium yellow head, nice lacing. Tastefully sweet raisin flavor, some candi, with subtle dry roasted malt, moss, and twig finish. Neat transition, well balanced, good mouthfeel. Alcohol not noticeable. More complex when warm, but still straightforward. Much more balanced than the last Belgian Scotch I had. This one is less dubbelish than the last one but still begs the question: is there much of a difference between the two?

Sampled on draft at 3 rivers 6 Pack this beer poured a very dark brown color with a medium sized tan head that lingered and produced some lacing. The aroma was malty and woody with a touch of smoke and fruit. The flavor was smoky, roasty, malty and nutty with a hint of tangy ripe fruits. The finish was long, dryish, woody and smoky. Medium body. Interesting.

Pours deep amber into a thistle. Tan head with good retention slowly recedes to skim surface leaving spot lacing. Nutty toast and caramel aromas. Dry with front to back sweet roasted nuts and bread. Lasting, smoky finish.
