Imperial Red Ale

Ard Ri (pronounced Ard like hard and Ri like bee) means High King in Old World Gaelic and certainly lives up to its name. Like all Irish Red Ales, Ard Ri gets its distinct color from roasted barley used in the brewing process, but we’ve stepped up the malt and hops to make this imperial version of the style.

This brew is slightly sweet with a complex malt character, balanced by a large hop addition to make it perfect for the big beer lovers and hop heads alike. Recipient of a Gold Medal in the 2007 World Beer Championships.

Bottle at DC local tasting. Bright, light copper color, highly carbonated, edge head. Aroma of butterscotch. Taste is bitter, smoky, dark cocoa and pepper. Very nice.

Sampled at the 2010 Indiana Winterfest. Poured a cloudy golden brown with a thin tan head. Aroma was a bit one note with a pine hop note. Pine the main note on the tongue with a nice grain undertone.

Bottled on Feb. 09. Medium amber/orange body, slightly hazy. Fizzy, off-white head, mostly lasting. Aromas of lightly toasted malts, biscuit, caramel, citrus orange and floral hops. The flavor is moderatley sweet and lightly bitter and finishes lightly to moderately sweet and moderately bitter. Fusel alcohol drives the taste which, at first, reminded me of orange-flavored cough medicine. Chewy malts in the finish. The aftertaste has remnants of peppery alcohol. Medium body, watery texture and lightly carbonated. A sipper. The alcohol seems dominant and is tamed only so much by the caramel malts and hops. Still, an interesting Irish red and I wouldn’t hesitate to drink again.

12oz bottle split. Nice creamy malt/hop aroma. Dark orange-brown, looks filtered. Says Imperial Red Ale so that’s the category I’ll rate from. This beer is excellent. Reminds me of the Belgian Bierre de Corsaire, pretty impressive. Hops are ever present, but the thick malt more than holds it’s own. I’d love to pick up a six-pack of this in the future.

Courtesy of Degarth. Pours hazy copper orange with off white head. The aroma is malt sweetness combined with crystal and medium roasted malts. The taste begins chewy and somewhat sticky with malts going to crystal malts and some pale – Munich – grainy malts. All throughout there’s a solid pine hop bitterness.

draft at O’Donnell’s in Ft Wayne - Pours amber with a thin head. The aroma has caramel malts and ample floral hops notes. The flavor has a hell of a hop kick to it that melts nicely into a robust caramel malt presence before concluding with a long hops finish. It looks like the recipe for this one has changed at least once, but all I can say is that this incarnation is very good.
