A black IPA nose, pillowy light tan head on a near black body. Heavily roasted malt and grain, molasses, citrus hops, and a hint of Belgian yeast, but really only a hint lead the taste profile. Butter and a touch of fresh ground coffee round out the taste experience. I like it, but it is not an Abbey Tripel. Not even close. so how do you rate that? I'll rate it as a black IPA, and a good one at that.

Pours a hazy golden-orange colour with lots of particles through it. A slight off-white frothy head, nicely lasting a while with some foamy lacing. Lots of citrus notes, like marmalade with Belgian Ale yeast and spices. The taste is Belgian-like, but very mild (as the alcohol content is quite low for a Tripel). Blended spices and hints of rye grains. Goes down nicely and still warms up well for this crazy winter.

Depanneur Peluso, Montreal 50cl ($5): Pours hazy light orange with a white head. Aroma is boozy, banana, some yeast, and a bit of spice. Taste is surprisingly boozy for a relatively low alcohol beer. Otherwise, there are certainly some hops. Light bitterness arises therefrom. Much less sweet than many tripels out there. Body is also ok. Spicy aftertaste. Something about the boozy taste of this really turns me off. Not a fan. My girlfriend liked it though, for what that is worth.

Fruity marmalade nose with banana and a bit of cinnamon. Thought I had a little metal accent at a certain point but it disappeared after. Mainly banana and spices nose. When I opened the bottle, head started coming out slowly. May be a too early bottling. Appearance is traditional blond color, hazy, head is creamy with an average thickness but stays on top for a very long time. No lacing at all. Taste: Attack is mainly happening at center of tongue, with fruits and sugars. Of course banana is well represented along with candi sugar and marmalade. Also a bit spicy with ginger, cinnamon and clove. Spices and sugar are the top flavors. Despite it’s spicy and sparkling aspects, it remains very smooth compared to some trippel I’ve tasted before. A well brewed trippel, faithful to style, without pretension and easy to drink.

Poured with a heavy head, cloudy gold. Smells strong alcohol, floral hops. Taste has some coriander. Not at all bad, just a good average triple. A touch too much on the boozy taste, I guess. Decent effort overall, though. Bottle from Peluso’s.

You know, it has a nice orange-gold body with a decent kind of creamy head. The aroma is good! It’s like a cross between a proper English bitter and a proper Belgian blonde.... after so many sucky Québec beers that couldn’t brew an aroma out of a paper bag, this is a pleasant surprise. The flavour is an odd mix between aromatic hops and floral malts... it isn’t bad, but it’s a bit weak on the palate and doesn’t instill confidence in this brew. Points for trying, but they need to get their game on if they want to really compete.

4oz. sample @ Churchkey, DC. golden color, thick white head. aroma, Belgian yeast, abbey style, light spices with herbal tones, barnyard, esters and wheat. flavors, got the impression of a Belgian witte with abbey elements. Sweet esters, honey suckle, nice orange peel flavors, some coriander spices, light berry use of junipers leaving a mild fruit bitter finish. This is tasty.

Bottle: Poured a dirty hazy light copper color ale with a medium foamy head with OK retention and some lacing. Aroma of medium sweet malt base with light fruit ester and a bready and lightly spicy yeast. Taste is also an enjoyable mix between a light sweet malt backbone with subtle notes of peach and apricot ester and a light spicy finish. Body is quite full with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Well done though additional character and a bigger malt backbone could have improve this beer.

Tap at Churchkey. Bright gold, large fluffy white head. Aroma of white pepper. Flavor has citrus, starts sweet and progresses to a sour bitterness, with a dry finish.
