Winter Storm may be Hugh's favorite beer in the Heavy Seas catalogue. Our winter ale draws on hops from the West Coast and the UK for its pronounced bitterness. A mix of pale and darker malts give it its tawny color and its bigger body. True to the style, Winter Storm's aroma is nutty malts and earthy hops. This is a perfect fall beer, especially because of its warming qualities.

Bottle 35,5 cl. Courtesy of Doodler. Pours a clear amber with a smal off-white head. Sweet caramel in the nose. Solid body, sweet dried dark fruits, some brown sugar, a phenollic touch. Some warming alcohol in the finish. 270411

Bottle from Bruisin Ales. Pours dark ruddy copper with an off-white smear. It smells quite malty, almost with a chocolate note. Not getting hop. Or maybe something herby/floral. Full bodied. Rather fresh roast caramel. A little sweet, but there’s a lot of hop. Floral mostly. A little thickish; a little sweetish; a lot hoppish. Yet it seems florally refreshing. Finishing very lightly sweet, but with a lot of hop. Unusual result.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark orange-brwn color with a medium sized foamy tan head that lingered and produced good lacing. The aroma was faint with notes of caramel, fruit and grass. The flavor was tangy with moderate caramel and light fruits. There was a sour and somewhat off middle that was a bit vegetal and fairly dry. The finish was long, tangy, dry and malty with some light vague fruits. Medium body with a bit of alcohol showing through. A couple of nice elements but overall rather disappointing.

2008 Bottle. Pretty dark brown with orange tints and a low, fine head. Nicely fragrant, with English and American hops still smelling nice after the time. Orange, tobacco, caramel. Appetizing. Flavorful malts, with chocolate and caramel, plus nice hops. Tobacco, grass, earth, plus a very bitter finish. Wow. Tastes fresh. Nice, verging on an old ale by now, though completely un-oxidized. Mellow and smooth, and very bitter. Would like to try it fresh to get those hops.

Pours deep amber into an English pint. Off-white conglomerate head with excellent retention leaves spotted sheets as it slowly recedes. Orange citrus aromas. Syrupy yet dry upfront with yeast and caramel. Lasting bitter finish.

Cask at Churchkey. Cloudy amber with chunks and floaties, medium light tan bubbles, just around the edge of the glass. Aroma of bread and caramel. Nicely hopped but with a good malt balance. Taste has a few splinters of oak, very subtle. Longish bitter finish. Nice enough.
