We welcomed the challenge of brewing a 90 IBU Imperial IPA that would showcase glorious American hops while maintaining a multi-dimensional character. Bring on the hops!
Description
This Imperial IPA is brewed with loads of pale malt and just enough caramel malt to provide a sweet malt backbone to balance the hop intensity. We used a mix of our favorite American hops including Chinook, Centennial, Simcoe, and Amarillo to create a complex hop flavor and lingering bitterness. Harpoon’s proprietary yeast lends fruity esters, while dry-hopping at the rate of over one pound per barrel produces this beer’s massive aroma.

Leviathan is an apt name: this beer is a powerhouse. The high alcohol content and robust flavor make this a beer for the strong-willed.

Bottle. Tasty, nicely brewed double IPA, though not as complex as Dreadnaught or as balanced as Hopslam. Dark amber body with orange highlights. Off-white, tall head. Citrusy aroma of grapefruit, pineapple and pine. Notes of caramel and grain. Hint of peach and orange. The flavor is moderately sweet and moderately bitter and lightly acidic. It finishes lightly to moderately sweet and moderately to heavily bitter. The alcohol comes through in the aftertaste a bit too much. Medium to full body with a watery texture that turns sticky in the finish. Moderate carbonation. A bit more separation of malts and hops would make this cleaner.

really nice DIPA, harpoon is one of those breweries that i tend to forget about, but this is a beer that helps me remember. well done

Sample at Neil’s HSC initation. This brew is a hazy orange-amber color with a medium and creamy light beige head that diminishes slowly. Stringy lacing on the glass. Floral hops aroma with some malt in the background. Medium body with a moderately bitter hops character that has pine and floral notes. Sweet malt and caramel undertones as well. The finish is hoppy with a lingering citrus aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

Bottle thanks to porterhouse. Pours with a medium, slightly yellow head over a hazed golden body. Pervasive aroma. Pine and citrus tang (orange), light grain, caramel, light honey. By far the best smelling beer I have seen...well smelled...from Harpoon. Taste is nice with sharp citrus hop notes, and some lingering caramel sweetness followed by a long, bitter citrus finish. Good! Medium to light carbonation, thickish/viscous mouthfeel. A very solid beer from, in my experience, a not so solid brewery.

Bottle - thanks dmschefke. Pours a pale, translucent orange color with a finger of creamy sand colored head. Nose is rich with citrus and hoppy sweetness. Light amount of resin, but mostly citrus sweet. Flavor is laden with hops; citrus and pine resin. Sweet, caramel, and just faint floral hops. Light alcohol burn in the tail. Lingering bitters of both floral and citrus. Very nice.

12oz bottle-pours a tight foamy off white head with some lacing and gold color. Aroma is simcoe, sweet citrus-lemon/pine hops. Taste is simcoe, citrus-grapefruit rind/lemon/some pine, slight tart/harsh bitter, some light malt, alcohol. Soft carbonation. Thanks to Joe-jwc215 for sharing this.

12oz bottle pours a transparent, orange with a frothy, active lacing white head. Aroma is as advertised, big American hop aroma, citrus, pine, flowers, grapefruits, candy, sweet caramel malts. Flavor is similar, more citrus fruits, now the pine comes in with a little bit of soap, sweet and clean malts, some light cracker. Finish is excessively bitter and lacks a bit of sweetness that rounds out the best DIPAs. By the aroma, look and most of the flavor you might think you were drinking Nugget Nectar, the finish is a bit of a let down though. Still, quite a pleasant surprise from one of my favorite breweries.

Bottle. Pours a nice orange with a dense two finger head. Aromas are straight pineapple, grapefruit and oranges. This hops presence also dominates the flavor, but it seems to be pestered a little bit by the alcohol which doesn’t tuck away quite nicely enough. Still, I’m a sucker for this type of thing...

Pours a lightly hazy orange - potent, piney hops greet the nose, with some biscuity maltiness underneath, grapefruit peel, and light honey - a really nice balance of american hop onslaught and moderate malt sweetness - a lot of tangy citrus fruit flavors through the middle - the sweetness gets a bit stronger in the finish, perhaps a little too much so, but this is a minor flaw - very well-masked alcohol - another solid brew in this series.
