We welcomed the challenge of brewing a 90 IBU Imperial IPA that would showcase glorious American hops while maintaining a multi-dimensional character. Bring on the hops!
Description
This Imperial IPA is brewed with loads of pale malt and just enough caramel malt to provide a sweet malt backbone to balance the hop intensity. We used a mix of our favorite American hops including Chinook, Centennial, Simcoe, and Amarillo to create a complex hop flavor and lingering bitterness. Harpoon’s proprietary yeast lends fruity esters, while dry-hopping at the rate of over one pound per barrel produces this beer’s massive aroma.

Bottle pour into tulip glass from Andover Liquors. Appearance is almost clear (slightest of haze) dark amber with nice sparkle, finger-width white fizzy head with poor retention and no lacing. Aroma is fruit, candied sugar and caramel. Taste is candied sugar, brown sugar, and caramel, dark fruit and late resin bitterness. Palate is medium bodied with frothy texture, average-to-lively carbonation and finish as taste. Overall, amazing that a beer with 90 IBU can be so malty and sweet. Not your typical DIPA--seems almost like a barley wine or Belgian strong ale.

On tap at the brewery Boston. Hazy amber colour lasting white head. It's big and sweet. Nails you to your seat. Big large hoppy. Alcohol heat on finish. It's quite big. Fine though. After you get over it. Quite a huge hoppy beer. Pine. Resin. Decent though. Yep pretty good. Pink grapefruit. Would get you drunk real fast.

Bottle 355ml @ Harpoon Tap Room - Terminal A, Logan Airport (BOS), Boston, MA
Pours clear deep golden with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, caramel, alcohol, floral, herbal and citrus. Taste is heavy sweet and medium bitter with a long warm, boozy, caramel, floral, grass and citrus finish. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. Way too strong, sweet and malty for my liking, didn’t seem that fresh either.

Reviewed from notes.
The appearance was a golden hazy orange colored body that leaves a one finger white foamy head settling to a lumpy bubbly film and leaves some nice lacing. No carbonation is seen rising.
The smell had a separated fruity/maltiness from the hops, both are there, but mostly distinct at different times.
The taste was way more combined between the flavors.
The palate was a bit sharp and about a medium, sessionable, uh maybe perhaps.
Overall, I actually thought this was going to be pretty good but sadly I had an old bottle that could have been the cause of being a mediocre beer.
