We welcomed the challenge of brewing a 90 IBU Imperial IPA that would showcase glorious American hops while maintaining a multi-dimensional character. Bring on the hops!

Description
This Imperial IPA is brewed with loads of pale malt and just enough caramel malt to provide a sweet malt backbone to balance the hop intensity. We used a mix of our favorite American hops including Chinook, Centennial, Simcoe, and Amarillo to create a complex hop flavor and lingering bitterness. Harpoon’s proprietary yeast lends fruity esters, while dry-hopping at the rate of over one pound per barrel produces this beer’s massive aroma.

Draught @ Rattle & Hum, NYC. Pours cloudy amber with airy off-white head. Clear aroma of hops with a citric touch to it and a subtle malty note. Sweetish, rather boozy onset, giving way to a hoppy symphony with angrassy epilogue. Heavy but good.

Poured from 12 fl oz bottle. Clear orangey yellow (even slightly pink) with a full white head. Citrusy hop aroma. Sweet citrus flavour followed by piney hops and hint of malt. Very creamy texture.

Purchased at Craft Beer Cellar in Belmont, MA, enjoyed in Roxbury while trying to watch the new Arrested Development. Appearance is a dark gold, relatively clear, no head. Aroma has an aggressive hop profile, bit of alcohol / port smell, light plum, bit unusual for the style. Taste is abrasive and goes down harsh. Huge hop profile, there is a crisp malt factor to it as well. Overall it's pretty good, definitely packs a punch.

Draft. Served in a snifter. Pours a deep orange color with off-white head. Lasting retention, sheets of lacing. Aroma is heavy malt and big, heavy hops (floral, pine, citrus are all there). Flavor is equally with the hops and malt. Bitterness lingers slightly. The alcohol is masked extremely well. (or perhaps I drink so many big beers, I no longer notice) But to me it drinks like a normal IPA. Real quaffable DIPA.

Bottle shared at a tasting at Ariel’s place. Clear deep golden. Aroma of resinous and piney hops, malt and quite a bit of alcohol. Sweet flavor with chewy malt, a bit of honey hints and bitter hoppiness in the alcoholic finish. Medium-bodied.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, best by 4/15/2012. Pours slightly hazy golden orange color with a nice 2 finger dense white head with great retention that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Some nice spotty lacing on the glass. Aromas of big pine, grapefruit, orange, mango, grass, caramel, honey, and some spicy alcohol. Nice and well balanced aromas with good strength. Taste of grapefruit, mango, pine, orange, biscuit, caramel, honey, and herbal spiciness. Good amount of bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus, pine, caramel, honey, and herbal spiciness on the finish for a while. Good malt flavor and bitterness balance. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a fairly creamy and slightly syrupy mouthfeel. Quite smooth to drink but is definitely a sipper. Alcohol is fairly well hidden with only a warming after the finish noticed. Overall this is a very nice imperial IPA. Nice and balanced hop flavors; and quite smooth to sip on.

Served at harpoon brewery in vermont on tap. A - deep wood brown with minimal head. S - piney smell, lots of hops but a sweetness with vanilla and syrup that’s very pleasant. T- huge hop explosion. Very strong maltyness but not in an overpowering way. It’s a very balanced IPA. M - medium body and tons of carbonation. O - this is a fantastic. IIPA!
