Pull on your wool socks and crack open a 2° Below Ale. This tasty winter warmer started life as a small batch beer brewed for the Al Johnson Uphill Downhill – a telemark ski race in Crested Butte, Colorado. The Uphill Downhill celebrates the exploits of Al Johnson, letter carrier extraordinaire, who delivered mail by ski in the late 1800’s. Dry hopping during fermentation creates a floral nose with a hint of pepper and spicy, subtle undertones. 2° Below provides a bright, hoppy palate and a cheery warm afterglow.

bottle - Pours amber with a small white head. It smells of caramel malt and a touch of floral hops. The flavor is dominated by toasted caramel malt. Hops bitterness is mild. For some reason this one reminded me more of an autumn seasonal, specifically a marzen, than a winter ale. It’s okay.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a clear copper color with a thin head. The aroma is strong and bright. There are notes of apples, cinnamon, cloves, citrus hops and bready yeast. The flavor is pleasantly bitter, well balanced and a little spice. The palate is medium and a little sticky. The finish is mildy bitter and astringent. Overall, an interesting and delicious beer.

Pours a pleasant golden-apricot color with small, quickly dissipating head. Some fruity notes, some nuttiness. I enjoyed it.

I picked this up at Trader Joe’s as part of a mix & match 6 pack, enjoyed on a Sunday afternoon pre holidays watching football. Appearance is a clear copper amber with a thin but frothy white head. Aroma surprisingly heavy on the hops, along with a touch of holiday spice, and a bit grassy. Very nice. Taste is malty with a nice finish, good mouthfeel, not really getting much on the hop end which is surprising considering the hop aroma. This is like a Fat Tire with a touch of holiday spice.

Had on tap @ Carolina Ale house in Columbia, SC. It is a nice amber color with a small head. The aroma is hoppy, almost lager-like. Front taste is equally hoppy but the middle and end offer up caramel, biscuit, minor sweetness. A decent, drinkable ESB.

Bottle. Fruity, tangy hop aroma with minerals, citrus, pine and light malt. Bright, dark orange color with lace. Light body, light malts. Some caramel sweetness—quite sweet, really, with citrus and pine hops. Clean finish with ok bitterness. Flowery flavor is decent but really not enough, but light and very sessionable.

Bottle. Caramel malt and bitter grass/vegetable aroma. Clear amber color with small head. Bitter celery and light caramel malt flavor - I can’t get past the celery/vegetable flavor. Not good.
