With the arrival of bock beer, the brewers mark the start of autumn. In the old days this was the first beer that was made after the summer with the fresh harvest of malt and hop. Hertog Jan was the first in The Netherlands who brewed Bockbier top-fermenting. This way, the flavor of the beer comes to its own better. Hertog Jan Bockbier has a pronounced full and creamy flavor, in which a slight whisp of caramel can be found.

30 cL bottle. Pours clear and golden deep amber with a small tan head. Roasted malty and light fruity. Sweet roasted caramel and breadish. Light metallic note and light bitterness. Otherwise rather smooth, malty and medium sweet. Light bitter finish.

On tap, last winter @ De Geuzen. Dark brown, beige head. Sweet aroma of brown sugar, some chocolate and roasted malts. Flavour is very sweet, malty, some chocolate, little bitterness. Too much sweetness for me, can’t finish it.

Dark ruby brown color, decent brownish head. Aroma of toasted rye bread, cookies, figs and iron. Sweetish caramelly flavor with dark fruits like prunes and raisins. Some roasted malty notes and touch of metal also in the flavor. This is not so much a dark bock (this is an ale), more like abbey dubbel - ok beer as such.

Draught at De Wildeman, Amsterdam Creamy lightbrown good mostly lasting head. Dark red-amber colour. Moderate malty and especially nice hoppy aroma. Moderate bitter flavor, slightly roasted. Oily palate. nice Dunkelbock.

Bottled (thanks ha1ag!). Dark brown colour, with small white head. Aroma is caramel and lots of malts. Some slight sweetness in it also. The flavour is also quite the same, with alcohol a bit more present. In my opinion a very pleasant bock.

Big beige creamy head; deep dark intensely red body. Faint sweetish aroma with licorice notes. Light, sweetish taste with strong roasty licorice overtones, wild berries, and marzipan. Delicate, harmonic, and balanced. This is exceptionally well made, and very good. Very drinkable. (0.25l on draft.)
