On a trip to Germany this spring, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. finalized its inaugural partner, Augsburg’s Brauhaus Riegele, for a brand new Oktoberfest beer. Released each fall starting in 2015, the collaborative seasonal will feature a different German brewery every year. The partnership blends centuries of brewing tradition with modern spirit, giving craft drinkers the ultimate Oktoberfest, a Bavarian festival beer unlike any they’ve experienced in the US.

Pours amber into a shaker. Bright white head with good retention recedes to skim surface. Cracked malt aromas. Medium bodied with sweet bready caramel upfront turning to a creamy, earthy bitter finish.

On draught at Winking Lizard. Clear amber-gold color with a medium off-white head that diminishes steadily to an outer ring. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roast malt, caramel and hops. Medium body with flavors of caramel malt, earthy hops and a touch of fruit. The finish is sweet with a malty aftertaste. Decent overall.

Bottle. A- Malty, grassy, hay, sweet corn, cereal. A- Orange color, clear liquid, white head. T- Malty, caramel, sweet, corn, straw. P- Light body, average texture, average carbonation, malty finish. O- Maybe I need to rethink this style and what I expect from it. I’m always expecting a little bit of spice, but get nothing but grains and malts. It was okay at very best.

Refrigerated 12 oz. brown bottle, bottled on July 9, 2015, poured into a glass. Clear copper with small off-white head. Aroma is corn with a hint of skunk, light body, lower carbonation, and some small-bubble lacing. Taste is corn, caramel malt, and hints of skunk. After only two months this is skunked?

12fl.oz. bottle. Pours a clear golden with a thin, fizzy, white head. Malty aroma with bread and grain. Sweet malty flavour with caramel, bread, grass, mild spice and a slightly dry, bitter finish. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Nothing special, just ok.

Keg at the Three John’s. It pours clear deep orange - amber with a small white head. The nose is toasty, grainy, soft peach, bread, light creaminess and cereal. The taste is crisp, malt - driven, toasty, bitter, some stewed orange, cereal, bread, cracker and a touch of pepper with a dry, lightly spiced finish. Medium body and moderate, foamy carbonation. Decent enough, but I was hoping for more from a 100 percentile for style... Perhaps a bit one-dimensional.
