0,33l from bottle at a pub in Bilbao. BB 04/22. black color, very small dark coffee colored head. smells licorice, earthy, bit nutty, tobacco. nice smell. Full body, soft carbonation, slick mouthfeel. tastes nutty, licorice, earthy, some bitter chocolate, light lactose. finishes lightly roasty bitter with notes of lactose, nuts and bitter chocolate. nice one overall, but not very easy to drink. overall nice.

Laugar’s take on the now ubiquitous imperial stout style, bottle from De Caigny. Medium thick, pale yellowish beige head, quickly reduced to a steady moussy rim and as good as nothing in the middle; black robe with hazy mahogany edges. Aroma of beef stock cubes, fried black pudding, bitter black chocolate and sweeter ’fondant’ chocolate in warming up, walnuts, butterscotch, wet leather, roasted black beans, dried fig, liquorish candy or even salmiak, black olives, elderberries, coffee grounds, oven roasted aubergines, balsamic vinegar somewhere, hints of gin, porcini, vermouth and dried manure. Concentrated flavours in the onset, some low dried fig- and old raisin-like sweetishness, deeper but effective roasted barley sourishness and, unsurprisingly based on the nose, a lot of beef stock- and even soy sauce-like umami dominating over the other flavours; carbo is soft as it should be, mouthfeel is thick, oily and viscous - also as it should be. Thick ’black’ malt body, nutty but as good as immediately bittering to toasted brown bread, bitter chocolate and eventually black coffee, filling the mouth cavity with roasted bitterness more than sweetness, though a certain thin ’carameliness’ provides some balance. Finish is a continuation of this thick roasted bitterness, with added spicy and leafy hop bitterness and considerable, rum-like, heating alcohol, though somehow this factor manages to remain warming instead of becoming obnoxious and unpleasantly wry. Coffeeish and even ’scorched’ nut-like bitterness remains for a long time after swallowing - a finish of long duration, as I should ’officially’ put it. Apart from that thin manure-like aspect in the nose and, perhaps, the exaggerated emphasis on umami flavours, this is a technically well-made ’impy’, with enough roasted bitterness to justify the imperial stout tag and with the alcohol well in place, though admittedly 8% ABV is on the lower end of this style. Nice, even though probably not all too exciting or individual in a world already teeming with this kind of beers...

Draft at Kaapse 3 year anniversary festival. Dark brown with a ring tan head. Aroma of roast, dark chocolate, malt, caramel, coffee. Flavour is above moderate sweet and bitter. Above medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Tasting glass @ Beerlovers Bar. Exodus Tour 2017. Black, huge thick mocha head. Nose is umami, mocha, chocolate mousse, gravy, coffee grounds,... Taste is mocha, cacao, far too umami, gravy, coffee grounds for me, lacking body,... Too thin. Not my kind of RIS. Def. expected more.

At the Exodus Tour 2017 / Beerlovers bar Antwerp. From tap. Pours very dark caramelly brown, nearly black. Small white head. Smell is rich roasty, dark fruits, black malts. Taste is full, roasty, burnt, ashy almost. Some dark fruits remain.

Botella 33 cl en el Kraken 07..02..2017. Lote 160101 hasta 11..2021. (r10). Color negro intenso brillante con espuma oscura más menos persistente. Aromas y sabores maltosos y cereales tostados algo secos con ligeros toques dulces melosos y cacao. Ligeros cafés. Cuerpo ligero a medio algo denso y espumoso. Bastante buena. Para repetir. Más dulce y maltosa que la azala con la que se comparó. La avena gana al Centeno...
