This pitch black oatmeal stout is as rich and complex as they come, but as smooth as chocolate milkshake.

Smoky, coffee and cacao aromas lead into rich chocolate ganache, bitter espresso and cocoa powder, with a warming plum brandy hit and a roasty bitter finish that balances out the chewy sweetness, while a liquid honeycomb mouth-feel lifts the bitterness and lets the vanilla shine through.

Malts: Carafa, Chocolate, Crystal, Flaked Oats, Pale, Wheat
Hops: Bramling Cross, Sorachi Ace, Willamette

On tap @ BrewDog Grünerløkka. Pitch black body with a small, but stable tan head. Nice, strong aroma of dark malt, dark chocolate, roasted coffee, dry fruit and some warming alcohol. Flavor is risch, smooth, dark, roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, dry fruit, vanilla, fruity hops and balanced bitterness. The alcohol is warming, but otherwise, well hidden. Full bodied and long lasting aftertaste. Very smooth and tasty, the best new Brewdog beer I have tasted in a long time.

Keg at BD CLJ, 22/09/15. Pitch black with a dirty tan head that dissipates to a swirl .. A real looker of a beer. Nose is roast malt, spice, light musty notes, dark chocolate. Taste comprises black pepper, earthy hop, spice, milk chocolate, rich malt, dark fruits. Full bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a little boost. Decent impy.

At BrewDog’s new Brussels establishment, generously shared by a friendly couple from Liège, many thanks for this! Thin and not very stable, light beige, creamy head over a very dark burgundy coloured beer. Wonderfully complex and enticing aroma of vanilla, meat broth, ruby port, baked banana, candied dates, cocoa nibs, whisky, milk chocolate, perhaps a hint of liquorice. Noble candied sweetness in the onset, lightly sticky, candied dates and marmelade, very soft carbo, smooth and thick oily body with the typical ’velvety’ oatmeal effect, sweet caramelly and nutty maltines, deeply chocolatey in the end with coffee hints but not becoming explicitly roasted bitter, resiny, with a lot of vanilla revealing itself both in pure flavour and in retronasal aroma; ends in a rich bittersweet tapestry with a glow of warming, brandy-like alcohol. Very rich, powerful yet still elegant beer, a masterpiece indeed, would love to slowly sip this at home.

Bottle from Cork & Cask. Black body with a thin tan head. Very faint lacing. Aroma of vanilla, hazelnut and earth. Flavour of chocolate ice-cream, fruit pudding and a hint of whisky. Medium body with a creamy texture. Light fizz. Drinks very easily for the ABV. Sweet but not cloying.

Re-rated 27/02/16. I concur with all sentiments previously expressed. 330ml bottle from Brewdog online shop. Pours dark brown with a thin tan head, tight bubbles. Aromas of tar, liquorice, double cream, liqueur chocolates. Taste is rich, tar, light vanilla, then it’s gone. Impressive up front, but seems to be missing something in the middle and end!

Draught @ Brewdog Helsinki. Pours pitch black with a smooth brown head. Aroma of roasty malts, licorice, coffee, cocoa, dark chocolate, syrup, hints of vanilla and milky lactic notes. Taste is heavy, smooth and sweetish with some licorice, loads of cocoa, molasses, syrup, vanilla, milk chocolate and roastiness. Finish is sweetish, heavy and complex with some cocoa, roastiness, dark chocolate, lactic milky notes, vanilla, syrup and licorice. Quite complex but balanced. Pretty tasty.

On tap at Brewdog Södermalm. Black with a tan head. Sweet with light roasted malt, cocoa, light vanilla and some alcohol. Nothing wrong with this although with a rather weak body.

Pitch black color. Dark, almost black head. Lots of soy sauce and molasses going on with lots of dark chocolate. Low carbonation and smooth. Pretty enjoyable but felt it should be aged for another 6 months or so before telease
