The 2014 Double DBA imperial special bitter is Firestone Walker’s flagship DBA brewed at double strength, using twice the amount of malts and hops. As with the regular DBA, the 2014 Double DBA was partially fermented in a union of new American oak barrels. After fermentation, the beer was racked and returned to the union barrels as well as bourbon barrels, where it aged for one year. The barrel mix for the 2014 Double DBA included vessels from Woodford Reserve, Elijah Craig and Four Roses.

Bomber received in trade. Thank you Pandableh! Pours slightly hazy very reddish golden with a rather small goldenish white head that leaves a small trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is is sweet and malty with caramel, sweet white bread, honey, coconut, dill, wood, vanilla fudge, alcohol, cereal, raisins and powdered sugar. Taste is sweet and tiny bitter with sweet white bread, honey, caramel, coconut, charred wood, vanilla fudge, slightly dry grass, zante currants, cereal and alcohol. Mouthfeel is soft, smooth, slightly boozy and medium to full bodied. Finish is sweet and tiny bitter with sweet white bread, caramel, coconut, vanilla fudge, bourbon, slightly dry grass and cereal.

Bottle from a trade with cbkschubert. 2012 vintage. Pours cloudy dark caramel color with light tan head. Aromas of toffee, molasses, toasted malts, oak and some alcohol. Sweet molasses flavor with toasted malts, oak, dark fruits and oak. Quite boozy. Full body with moderate carbonation and a syrupy mouthfeel. Thanks Craig.

Pours deep amber into a snifter. Off-white head with medium retention recedes to mottle surface. Sweet caramel and oak aromas. Thick with sweet toffee upfront turning hot before the lasting tropical fruit, oak and resin finish.

22oz bomber pours clear deep ruby red with tan head of foam. The aroma offends with robust levels of booze, sweet whiskey, coconut and candy like sweetness. I can’t say that the taste is any different. It is just full up booze and whiskey that gets hot and boozy from time to time. It also has lesser notes of sort of a coconut to candy like sugary sweetness. So. . . . did beer go into these barrels too? I get zero beer notes, could be PBR that went into the barrels. I don’t get it.

Bomber from The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours hazy dark amber with a slight beige head, which didn’t last long but tried to ring. Aroma is rich malt with hints of wood and perhaps treacle. Arguably full bodied. Flavor is light brown sugar, light oak astringency, and some light hop. Comes across a bit treacle. The heat is not really present to a noticeable extent. The individual flavors seemed light, but the sum is greater than the parts. The overall effect is a lot of flavor. Really excellent ale.

Moderately strong aroma of bourbon and oak, not much else. Hazy ochre, headless. Wooooo, boozy Bourbon, nougat, vanilla flavor. Far too boozy for my liking. Ugh, I just don’t find any enjoyment in beers like this.

Bottle thanks to Dallas for picking it up. Pours a deep caramel color with a small beige head. The aroma is big toffee and caramel malts, some light berries. The flavor is interesting very warm but mellow in intent somehow: sweet caramel and toast, wood, sweet berries and other sweeter fruit, some alcohol bite, actually quite a bit of warmth in the finish. Interesting.

Sample at Ale Wine & Spirits in Powell on 08/09/2012. Deep amber pour with a medium off-white head that diminishes steadily Stringy lacing on the glass. The aroma consists of caramel malt, toffee and subtle bourbon. Full, smooth body with flavors of oaky vanilla, sweet malt, grassy hops and a bit of dark fruit. The finish is rich and malty with an oak aftertaste. Good beer all around.

Draft @ the brewery. Pours a hazy orange color with a small off-white head. Has a sweetish malty woody bourbon vanilla aroma with woody hints. Sweetish malty woody bourbon and vanilla flavor with caramel toffee hints. Has a sweetish malty woody caramel and bourbon finish with hints of vanilla.

Bottle @ home. I’ve really enjoyed the other Firestone Walker potent stuff, so I was excited to pick this one up and try it. Pours a somewhat hazy, amber appearance with a sizable, fluffy, light brown head. Sugar, rich caramel, toffee, somewhat herbal, a bit grassy, thick malty, sweet aroma. Quite rich, toffee, coffee cake, mild oak, vanilla, sugary caramel, somewhat fruity, light passion fruit, tangerine, big candy sugar flavor with herbal bitterness and some booze on the finish but it’s somewhat masked by the super rich sugary notes. I’d like to like this more, but it’s so fucking sweet.
