For this year’s Rainbow Project collaboration with Garage Project we drew the colour indigo. After much research on both sides the idea that excited us all most was that of the Blacklight Banana. Ripe bananas uniquely glow bright indigo under UV lights, one possible reason for this being that it identifies them as a food source for animals that see in the UV range, like bats. Molasses, Caramelised Bananas, Banana Purée and Bourbon Barrel Aged Coffee Beans elevate this beer to something special. Bottle split at L42, thanks to the team, 14/11/16. Extremely dark mahogany brown with a decent tan cap. Nose is burnt toffee, spice, charr, chocolate, dark fruit rinds, background nana chews. Taste comprises charr, molasses, chocolate and banana loaf, toffee melt, roasted tones, peppery spice. Medium + body, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a light alcohol rise. Ok impy and gets the banana message across but lower down the pecking order of Siren’s impy stout range!

On tap at Brother’s Beer. Pours slightly translucent black with a little head. Aroma is gorgeous coffee, banana, biscuits and a sherry like oaky heat. Flavour is coffee soaked banana bread with a spicy alcohol note and some sweet vanilla. Quite thin body. I think I like it, but I’m not really sure. It’s a nice idea, and it would have made a gorgeous sweet oatmeal stout or something like that. As it is, the alcohol heat just kills off the banana before it gets going and the whole thing just feels like a missed shot.

Bottle. Wine Rack, Sharrow, Sheffield. Chestnut brown. Thick ring of tan head. Nose has coffee grinds. Some soy. Some ripe banana. Maybe some raisin and date. Taste is estery sweet. Light bitterness. Medium body. Soft carbonation. Really short, watery, coffee bean bitter finish. Typical Siren. Top dollar, without ever really doing the business.

33cl bottle from the Grumpy Goat, Reading. An opaque, peaty brown colour, that’s ruby red when held to the light, with a dense tan coloured head; aroma of milk chocolate and ruby port; thick creamy body with chocolate and oaked red wine; then a dry finish with some roasted banana and a gentle warmth. A really good sipper.

Cask at CBC CG - London. Pours black-brown with a creamy, tan head. The nose holds dark malts, some dark fruit, cocoa. Medium sweet flavour with some tangy berries, earth, more chocolate, mellow roast, a little ruined banana. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation. Finishes sweet and sugary, with more dark malts, ripe dark fruits, ripe banana. Novel but not super drinkable.
