Berliner Weisse-Style Ale with Added Passionfruit, Orange & Guava
We’ve had plenty of fan-favorite beers over the years, but few have garnered the cult-like adoration of this one. Stone Notorious P.O.G. was originally brewed at our 10bbl Liberty Station brewhouse in San Diego, as a collaboration with comedian / actor Jonah Ray. It’s a tribute to the passion fruit, orange and guava juice (aka POG) he grew up drinking in Hawaii. This Berliner Weisse-style ale is loaded with the aforementioned trifecta of fresh, tropical fruits, making for a unique flavor that’s tart and refreshing yet deeply rich and complex. It’s as ridiculously tasty as it is deliciously unique.
This beer was first brewed with Jonah Ray for Hop-Con 4.0. It was such a hit that we decided to brew a limited amount again this year. Jonah grew up playing POGs while he was living in Hawaii and drinking POG Juice so he wanted to create a beer with POG in mind. A very refreshing tart ale with plenty of fruit character. Passion fruit and guava intermingle with an intense orange punch.
Admin Note: This was initially released as part of the Stone Pilot Series in a limited draft-only release.

Beer without Beards: pours hazy yellow with white head. Aroma is orange, passionfruit and guava of course. Taste is sweet fruit juice. Not much else, but it is good.

From a 355ml can on 10/8/2019 (ABV 4.7% rather than 4.5%). Pours a cloudy golden/straw colour with a small white head. Has a big passion fruit, orange and guava nose, as suggested the beer's moniker. The taste follows suit, though it's only moderately sweet, finishing off with a moderately sharp, tart bitterness. Lightish body with average carbonation. Quite tasty and refreshing. I'm not a big berliner weisse fan but this is definitely better than average (which is entirely unsurprising given it's a Stone).

Very much what it says it is, with a shitload of passion fruit, orange, and guava, so much so you can't really discern where the fruit ends and the Berliner weisse begins. Very, very acidic and tart, with a floral orange zest bitterness on the finish underlined by the subtlest of grainy sweetness. Not my thing, but no doubting it's a well-made pint, judging by the gorgeous pour and the creamy, easy-drinking feel.

Sampled on draft this beer poured a murky apricot color with a small foamy orange-white head that left no lacing. The aroma was tart with mango and orange notes. The flavor was tart with mango and orange juice. Long finish. Medium body.

Can from Bottlecraft in SD. Hazy bright yellow-peach pour with thin white head. Aroma is tart guava passion fruit and vitamin. A bit more on the vitamin side than I like but I know that’s sometimes part of the style. Taste is similar - again tart guava passion fruit citrus peel. Palate isn’t too thin, nice. Finish is more tartness. Very much what it says on the can, just not my favorite.

Orange and guava nose, very little of the passion fruit, thankfully. Opaque orange, thin head. Orange, passion fruit. Relatively dry and slightly tart. Medium body, easy carbonation. More fruit than sour.

12 ounce can from Corks & Caps, Greenville, WI, 7/28/19. 4.7% canned version brewed in the US (CA & VA). Rating 15.8k! Murky, muddy orange, thin creamy off-white head, fair retention. Aroma of orange juice with passionfruit and grapefruit. Taste is passionfruit, grapefruit, orange, tart lemon, lacto. Medium bodied, bright and tart, lemony, full bodied, and maybe because this is essentially just boozy juice that would go well with breakfast... it seems a little pulpy.
