33cl bottle from the Sainsbury’s Beer Hunt range. Pitch black with a brief fizz of coffee coloured head; chocolate and coffee aroma; artificial coffee flavour with a touch of vanilla and some red fruit and soused raisins; the finish is thin, over-sweet and rather dry at the same time. Unexciting and disappointing.

This one just really wasn’t to my taste. I like the smell but not the flavour of coffee and unlike something like Bateman’s Mocha the coffee in this isn’t tempered by anything else really.

Bottle at home (from Stevenage Sainsburys) - 29/09/12. Mid black in colour with a medium sized coffee head that retains for a while then thins to the edges. Dark malts on the nose, coffee, molasses, chocolate, a little smoke. Sweet tasting beer, lots of sugar, chocolate, espresso and roast malts. Medium bodied with soft carbonation and a sweet finish. Ok - a little too much sweetness and not quite the balance I’d have liked.

330ml bottle. Pours a very dark brown with no head. Aroma is intense coffee and chocolate, like the coffee chocolates that everyone leaves in a selection box. Taste is bitter coffee to start then more chocolate and coffee on the finish. Flat. Can’t shake the artificial Quality Street taste.

Bottle shared with Jack and a couple random blokes down at The Kernel, London. Pours dark brown with a creamy beige head. Lovely aroma, all rich coffee, Dunkin’ Donuts coffee, with soft roast. The flavor is another story - it’s not so good: lightly sweet with moderate roast and plastic. Light bodied with fine carbonation. A bit of dryness to finish, more plastic, coffee, soft roast, burnt sugars. Great aroma, poor flavor.

Bottle from Sainsburys. Almost black in colour with a slight, off-white head. Aroma of burnt malts, milk chocolate, prunes and vanilla with plenty of caramel. Flavour was very sweet, tasting of creme brulee, milky way and dark fruits, with a sticky, alcoholic Irish coffee finish. Way too sweet, it set my teeth on edge.

330ml bottle from Sainsburys Ashford. Black body, thin lasting beige head. Coffee and black choc aroma. It is like smelling a coffee dark chocolate chocolate. More choc and coffee and strong coffee in the flavour in mouth and swallow. The problem is that although this beer is 6% ABV, there isn’t enough firmness in the malts to carry the really strong flavours. So you end up with this high cocoa % choc and espresso coffee wandering all over the palate but not enough structure to pull it all together. Full of flavour, but needs structure. I probably should give it a lower score but I do like the choc and coffee.

Bottle from Tomlinsons beer shop, Inverness. It pours very dark brown, with a thin beige head. The nose is very sweet coffee, Irish Coffee pervades the air, treacle and honeycomb. The taste is very sweet, cheap sugary coffee, light roasted malt, treacle, cream and some acidity, with a dry finish. Quite light body and moderate carbonation. A bit thin and sickeningly sweet.....

33cl bottle from Gordon and MacPhail. Pours opaque black with a thin layer of lace which does hang around. The nose has intense coffee maybe even towards Tirimasu. The taste has more of the intense coffee and Tirimasu. The palate is so dominated by coffee that it overpowers the malt, hops, etc. The body is large and the texture is big and creamy and the finish is a little cloying but as bad as some - maybe needs just a prickle of C02 to give it a bit more balance. Overall, a good experience.

Medium dark beige head with some dancing bubbles on top. Opaque black body. Syrupy nougat and coffee aroma with perfumy toffee notes. Sweetish chocolatey coffee taste is perfumy and strangely empty after that powerful aroma. Mid-to-light body. Mild, soft mouthfeel. Dryish coffee and earth aftertaste with metallic notes. It’s not really bad, but this tastes more like coffee pudding with metal shavings in it than a real beer. (0.33l bottle, Alko Arkadia, Helsinki.)
