Can from Wine Reserve, Cobham. Aroma is smoky, cured. Makes me specially think of smoked herring. Underlying caramel. Dark murky opaque brown. Foamy white head. Come to think of it this is the Dorking beer that's eluded me since I joined RB and it was off at the Spoons in Farnborough when I ordered it. Ooh - the can features photos of olde Germane buildings - presumably Bamberg. Medium-heavy bitter. The balance is not quite right. It's upfront. Acrid and quinine. Smooths out as you grow accustomed to it. Burnt caramel. Almost resinous touch. Medium bodied. Slick. Flat carbonation. Long dry astringent finish. Whilst I have my reservations about the final product it has slipped down...

Pours a lightly hazed mahogany brown colour with a small frothy beige head. The aroma is light smoke, caramel and malt. A moderately sweet malty taste, caramel and some smoky notes and a light bitterness. A bit watery and doesn't quite deliver.

(Cask at White Horse, Parson’s Green, London, 27 Nov 2016) Dark brown colour with foamy, beige head. Malty, fruity nose with notes of caramel, dried fruit and gentle smoke aromas. Malty, fruity taste with caramel, dried fruit, prunes, balanced smoke flavours and a gentle bitterness. Medium body, with a certain sweetness. Tasty and well balanced, with a mild smokiness. Quite nice.

Cask at the Tilly Shilling (JDW), Farnborough. A deep golden chestnut pour with a thin cream head; sweet aroma with a trace of smoke; smooth and sweet in the mouth, very lightly smoked with just a hint of bacon; then a caramel finish. Very subtle, I was expecting something with much more smoke.

Cask at the Crosse Keys, JDW - London. Pours clear, deep gold with a lastig, foamy off-white head. Lightly dry bready malt nose with just hints of smoke. Light to medium sweet flavor with decent beech wood smoked malts, touches of bread and semi-dry caramel, faint pine needle bitterness. Light bodied with soft to fine carbonation. Modest sweetness to finish, restrained smokey beech wood, soft caramel, hints of ripening citrus. Fair.

Cask-conditioned at the Willow Walk (JDW), Victoria Station, 28/5/2013. Medium brown with a slight, off-white head. Light, beech wood and cookie dough aroma. Flavour was sweet and slightly yeasty up front, with a touch of tart fruit, leading to a smoky finish with touch of streaky bacon thrown in. Good.
