Collaboration beer devised by beer bloggers Rob from Hopzine and Rich from The Beer Cast.
The guys chose to collaborate on a beer that really embodied what a writer needs to get those cogs turning; coffee for a pick-me-up and chocolate for a sweet kick and they added oatmeal for a Scottish twist. The beer is a 6.5% milk, oatmeal, chocolate coffee stout. They joined us at our old stomping ground, the original BrewDog brewery in Fraserburgh (affectionately known as the Dystopian Puppet Hobby Centre), for a brew day to help us make the beer.
Rob and Rich have named the beer Dead Metaphor, after a lot of the nomenclature and meaningless buzz words and phrases that are bandied about in the world of beer writing. This beer should be sipped for instant inspiration.

330ml bottle from Appellation Wines, cheers Ash! Pours black with a nice tan head. Light milk chocolate aromas, some coffee as it warms up. taste has more of the same. Medium body, creamy texture, clean finish. Was expecting more from this. There was more coffee and chocolate in the previous beer that just used malts, no added ingredients.

33cl bottle from Appellation Wines. Appearance - opaque black with a lovely fluffy head. Nose - a bit delicate but dark chocolate coming through.Maybe some cream. Taste - dry dark chocolate, some milkiness and a very faint coffee but possibly because I was looking for it. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy texture and a fairly fresh finish. Overall - solid but not getting the expected sweetness from the chocolate. Perhaps needs to be higher ABV. Sorry, Rich, was expecting a little bit more aroma and flavour.

Bottle 0.33l at William K. Kurvi, Helsinki. Batch 018. Best Before 17/07/15. Colour is almost black with small slightly brownish white head. Aromas and flavours: Coffee, hints of milk and roasted malts. Pretty dissapointing.

Draft from BrewDog Shepherdβs Bush opening night on 29 November 2013. Poured black with a dense tan head and great lacing. Medium to full mouth feel. Aroma of dark malt, port and liquorice. Some roast in the initial flavour, but predominantly more sweet with burnt sugar and black cherry. Finish was bitter chocolate, coffee and molasses sugar. Initially a little sweet for my palate, but the aftertaste was rather tasty.

Brewdog Shepherds Bush. Keg. Opaque black - brown beer with a tidy pale tan head. Palate is smooth and airy and slightly dry. Good fine carbonation. Very mellow dark malts with light airy malt cream. Whisper of bubblegum ester. Nice mellow earthy coffee. A vague fruitiness underneath. Turns a little sweeter with light candy fruits before a smooth semi dry finish. Nice beef, just lacks an extra dimension to make it really sing.

Keg at Brewdog Edinburgh. Black colour, foam tan head and roasted malty aroma. Taste is chocolatey malt, dark fruity, some smokey roast bitterness. Slightly oily mouthfeel, medium bodied, soft carbonation, roast bitter finish. Quite drinkable.

Keg at Brewdog Camden. Opaque black caramel coloured pour with a fleeting thin light tan head. Aroma has very earthy hop and roast notes, honey and mushroom. Soft roasted edge. Flavour leans on the mellow dry roasted coffee with earthy hop and some indeterminant spices, nutmeg maybe. Quite sweet finish. Palate is medium full and silky. Medium duration roast finish.

Would clearly be be better in cask... Deep black... Thin tan head... Soft charcoal... Dark malts... Tooooo cold... Light lactic chocolate... Deep roast... Little too thin... Way too bitter.. Big chocolate roast... Massive dark chocolate finish... To thin and bitter for me

Keg at IMBC 2013. It pours darkest brown with a small light tan head. The nose is dark chocolate, roasty, cocoa, mild spiciness, nuts and toasted oats. The taste is roasty, cocoa, toast, decent bitterness, earth, mild astringency and Brazil nuts with a bitter, roasty finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Not picking any milk.... Decent enough, but perhaps a touch thinner than I would like. Alright.
