Collaboration beer devised by beer bloggers Rob from Hopzine and Rich from The Beer Cast.
The guys chose to collaborate on a beer that really embodied what a writer needs to get those cogs turning; coffee for a pick-me-up and chocolate for a sweet kick and they added oatmeal for a Scottish twist. The beer is a 6.5% milk, oatmeal, chocolate coffee stout. They joined us at our old stomping ground, the original BrewDog brewery in Fraserburgh (affectionately known as the Dystopian Puppet Hobby Centre), for a brew day to help us make the beer.
Rob and Rich have named the beer Dead Metaphor, after a lot of the nomenclature and meaningless buzz words and phrases that are bandied about in the world of beer writing. This beer should be sipped for instant inspiration.

Bottle, 33cl, shared by Gunnar. It’s a clear-looking dark brown beer topped by a small, light tan head. The aroma is really roasted, with lots of dark sugars and some coffee and dark chocolate. The flavor is quite roasted and sweet, with some hoppy and malty bitterness. Smoked hints and some licorice. It’s full to medium bodied, with a light warming feeling even though it’s quite low on ABV. Lasting finish with some smoke, but mostly roasted malts and coffee. Sure a pretty decent one, at an unusually low ABV level for a beer tasting and smelling like this. 140305

A colablack beer with a dense, big and light brown head. The nose is strongly roasted, lots of coffee, some bread, herbs, no chocolate. A smooth taste of strong and roasted coffee, herbs, some chocolate sweetness. Medium bodied, medium carbonation, smooth and nice to drink. I expected more interesting and complex beer. As like this a stable and roasted coffee beer, nevertheless, a smooth and pleasant.

Bottle bought at Braukunst Live 2014. Pitch black, oily body, with medium, creamy, brown head. Aroma mainly of espresso, but also roasted malt, bitter chocolate, liquorice, toast and some smoke. Taste is less dominated by coffee, also roasted malt, dark chocolate, wood, some dark fruits, some smoke. Mouthfeel is medium, with a strong carbonation, maybe a bit too much, and it finishes bitter-roasty and dry, with coffee, wood and some smoke. Very good, maybe too much dominated by bitter coffee, which disturbs the balance a bit. But a tasty brew nonetheless, just lacking the last bit of extraordinariness for a top class Stout.

330ml bottle. Quasi black colour with average to huge, thick, creamy, fairly lasting, moderately lacing, brown head. Roasty dark malty aroma, notes of dark chocolate, a spicy touch of lovage. Taste is initially dry, roasty dark malty, notes of dark chocolate and a spicy touch of lovage, later more milk chocolately with some sweetness; in the lasting finish again dry, roasty, also bitter hoppy and minimally metallic.

Bottle from Cornelius. Black body with a thin tan head. Nice lacing. Aroma of ash, milk chocolate, treacle and vanilla. Flavour of cherry, roasted malt, salt and treacle. Thin body with a watery, slightly oily texture. Lively fizz. A decent Stout with nice bitter character.

Tap at Kaisla. Dark brown color, small brownish head. Aroma is toasted malty, coffee beans. Medium-bodied. Toasted malty, coffeish, chocolaty flavor. Robust palate. Nice stout.

(Draught at BrewDog Stockholm, 20 Feb 2014) Black colour with frothy, beige head. Roasted, malty nose with notes of coffee, chocolate, dark bread and a touch of tobacco. Malty, roasted taste with dark chocolate, coffee, black rye bread, liquorice and a generous coffee bitterness in a finish with a touch of sweetness. Medium body, velvety mouthfeel. Tasty and well balanced stout. Nice one.

(Keg at Kaisla, 20140217) The beer poured black. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had chocolate, coffee and a little bit of burnt malts. Palate was full bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were chocolate, coffee, burnt malts, sweetness, ash and bitterness. Afteraste had very dark chocolate, burntness and bitterness. The chocolate flavours I sensed were too overwhelming. Otherwise nothing to complain.
