“The ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“
The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

Aroma is lovely with lots of mocha, some chocolate and truffles. Flavour is somewhat spicy with mocha, some tobacco, ashy tones, dark chocolate and burnt wood. Also some hoppy notes in the background. Delicious.

Bottle. Pours opaque black with a small quickly dissipating tan head that leaves some lacing in its wake. Aroma is coffee forward, perhaps a bit stale, some roasted malts and chocolate as well. Flavor is light sweet and medium bitter, heavy coffee, roasted malts, ash, again a bit of staleness. Fullish body, fairly acidic. Decent, but a significant disappointment given Prairie’s involvement.

Poured from a 12oz bottle. Aroma is full for chocolate and coffee with some light fruit esters and light roast. Nice nutty coffee character with some good dark chocolate notes. Pours black with a small, thin, light mocha head that recedes quickly to the edges. Light lacing and medium legs. Flavor is very coffee forward with some moderate dark chocolate. The cocao nibs are a bit toasty and less than great. Moderate roast flavor with moderate bitterness. Light nuttiness and hints of alcohol in the finish. Mouthfeel is medium to medium full bodied with medium low carbonation. Medium astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall an alright stout with nice coffee and chocolate notes in the aroma, but the character is too astringent in the flavor and the coffee isn’t as fresh. Spaghetti is a nice gimmick but I don’t get any notes from it, though I suppose as its just grain I shouldn’t.

0,33L bottle, BB 30.09.2015. Pours black with tan head. The head doesn’t stay. Aroma is stale coffee, roast and alcohol. Taste is stale coffee, dark chocolate, slight fruits, roast, and creamy. Overall: not bad if you don’t mind stale coffee. Re-rate from tap (@Põrgu, Tallinn): sweeter than I remembered and drinkability higher, but otherwise still the stale coffee beer. +1 to overall for drinkability

4 oz draft at ChurchKey. Poured a pitch black color with a small, nice light brown head. Aroma was chocolate, coffee, roasted malts. Don’t get a whole lot of spaghetti, but I suppose it’s like any other grain I guess. Flavor was nice coffee roast, chocolate, malt. Liked this one a lot.

Just a coffee bomb. I’m not sure about spaghetti but it’s probably just called this because of the Italian prairie connection. Pours dark with ok head and lacing, finishes with light bitterness. Thanks to radagast at Churchkey.
