An Agave-based Strong Ale, Agave Maria is The Lost Abbey’s first venture into oak aging in Tequila barrels to hit distribution.
Using a blend of Anejo and Reposado barrels and aged for a minimum of ten months, Agave Maria has hints of black pepper, sweet sugar, oatmeal, and oak with an earthy, bitter smoked chocolate on the finish. The base beer, a new Agave strong ale, was created specifically to pair with the spiciness of the Tequila, adding a sweet honey-like quality to the beer.

On tap at the Port Brewing Co / The Lost Abbey brewery. Poured a very dark brown color with a small tan head. Aroma was some boozy notes, raisins, lots of booze, malt. Plenty of molasses notes in this one.

Sampled on draft at Pour in Ebensburg this beer poured a murky dark brown color with a small foamy biege head that left good lacing. The aroma was tequila, wood and cactus. The flavor was woody, cactus, tequila and dark fruit. Very long finish. A touch boozy but well controlled for 13%. Moderately full bodied. Well done.

Small fizzy shortlasting head. Aroma is slightly sour-ish sweet, grass, butter, oak, minerals, alcohol, sour cream, butterscotch, unripe berries, spices. Taste is slightly sour-ish grassy, weeds, sour grass, oak, minerals, alcohol, unripe berries, bark, sour cream, butterscotch. Medium bitterness, slightly dry anf fizzy mineraly mouthfeel. Nice and interesting.

Bottle. Pours dark brown, with a small creamy offwhite head. Aroma is dark roasted malts, with dried dark fruits and prunes. Flavour is roasted malts, and a sour sting of what presumably is tequila barrels, as well as berries, oak, vanilla and an alcohol sting lingering through the finish.

Small, if stable fine yellow head on top of deep ruby-brown beer. Alcoholic nose, heavy but with strange side aromas: cheese, stale water, desinfectant, wood, aldehydes. Sharpish, bit vegetable -sourish flavours added to a not meritfree Oud bruin. Again slightly cheesy and less disturbing side flavours. Alcoholburn, thick & viscous, rich oily feel; good carbonation. Say ten Hail Mary’s with a double tongue. In Spanish.

Dark chestnut colour with a small white head. Malty aroma of bread and toffee, with fruity notes and obvious agave/tequila and a faint dusty oxidised note. The flavour is tart and fruity with lots of tequila I like tequila and I like this beer. Your relationship with tequila will matter a lot...

A dark brown beer with a slightly yellow and almost medium head. Aroma has dried fruits and some red currants, weird sweetness that is probably agave nectar. Taste has dark and dried fruits, lots of agave nectar. Medium+ bodied, medium carbonation, quite fresh. Weird beer, maybe too weird. Agave is dominating.

Brown color with small beige head. Malts and berries, sweet, but also refreshing. Taste is intense but still kinda light. Fruity. Dangerous! It’s got a very special burn in the end. Interesting, to say the least. Incredible that this is 13.5 ABV.

Bottle from trade with fonefan, thx! Trübe orangebraune Farbe, geringe beige Schaumkrone. Geruch intensiv malzig, süß, holzig, reife Früchte, rote Beeren. Geschmack kräftig malzig, sehr holzig fruchtig Noten, reife Beeren, Dörrobst, alkohlisch, klasse!
