An Agave-based Strong Ale, Agave Maria is The Lost Abbey’s first venture into oak aging in Tequila barrels to hit distribution.
Using a blend of Anejo and Reposado barrels and aged for a minimum of ten months, Agave Maria has hints of black pepper, sweet sugar, oatmeal, and oak with an earthy, bitter smoked chocolate on the finish. The base beer, a new Agave strong ale, was created specifically to pair with the spiciness of the Tequila, adding a sweet honey-like quality to the beer.

Bottle. Pours an amber color with a small off-white head. Has a fruity malty woody spicy dark fruit and tequila aroma. Fruity malty woody tequila and dark fruit flavor. Has a fruity malty spicy woody tequila and dark fruit finish.

Flaska från Galatea/craftbeer. Tack för att jag fick hjälpa till Daniel! Ganska muggig smutsbrun vätska med lågt skum. Väldigt speciell doft som jag antar har att göra med agaven. Jag tänker kaktus, lite anis, fat. Smaken är söt men med en syrlighet tätt intill och mycket värmande alkohol som är väl integrerad. Tänker lite på cuvée de Tommes kvaliteer men där är bären och syrlighen mer framträdande. Känns som ett typiskt LA öl och även om det inte är deras bästa så det annorlunda, kul och väldigt gott.

Bouteille 37.5cl, anno 2014. Ambrée-cuivrée, col fin blanc-cassé. Arôme oscille vers le malté avec un rétro nasal complet de Tequila et barrique. Note une once d’effluve douce d’agave et un léger fruité. Palais est assez bien effervescent pour autant d’alcool. Le tout garde un profil boisé mais est ponctué par un côté aigrelet qui n’est pas spécialement ce que j’attendais. Ce dernier vient soit de la barrique ou alors de ce mélange avec la Tequila. Une contrebalance perce avec un résiduel doux de l’agave? Boisé modéré et distinct renfoncé par ce profil spécifique de Tequila. Impression de sucre caramélisé, fruité noir presque de réglisse. AU final, on garde ce palais aigrelet persistant et de cette haute effervescence qui n’ajoutent pas à la note finale mais diminuent le caractère complexe de cette bière. Cette version renforce mon avis que la mise en fût de Tequila n’est pas la meilleure option. Décevante surtout pour le prix.

(Bottle @ VilleValla Pub, Linköping, Dec 19 2014) Dark reddish brown with a big fading tan head and a bit of lace. Aroma of tequila and oak really dominating, golden raisins, clean cheddar cheese type sourish funky notes. On palate, sweetish dried fruit and caramel malt core, agave, slightly tart, wood that builds as it dries, light cashew notes. There is some reposado type tequila character in the finish. Basically it is a fairly sweet Belgian ale damped almost completely by an agave and tequila barrel wood character and some subtle funk. Some alcohol heat. Medium full body and pretty soft carb. Not quite sure how to feel about this one as it is quite interesting even though the tequila character is anything but subtle. I wonder how more extended ageing might treat it?

Sample at Kurtkeller 018: Tequila-aged and Let’s Agree to Ruin Our Evening with Pepper beers-tastic 01 on 11/04/2014. Pours a hazy brown color with a minimal off-white head that dissipates quickly to a sparse outer ring. Spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma of tequila, oak and fruit. Full-bodied and slightly undercarbonated with flavors of ripe fruit, tequila, oak and brown sugar. The finish is oaky with a tequila aftertaste. Above average overall.
