It is always exciting to find unusual, intriguing ingredients from different parts of the world. Especially ones where at the very first taste, an idea for a beer jumps out and stares you right in the face. In the case of Krakatau, this happened to NCB brewer Josefine in a market on the island of Java, in Indonesia. After tasting Javanese coconut palm sugar, the idea for a rich, powerful, exotic stout was born. She was so convinced by the idea, she bought all the sugar available – plus a couple of extra suitcases – and brought it home to Stockholm in her checked luggage!

The name Krakatau comes from an active volcanic island off the coast of Java, and perfectly matches the character of this beer. Bubbling under the dark surface lies a deep, irresistible power which erupts in a tsunami of sensory explosions. Destruction and creation often go hand in hand, and in this beer we have created a sleek, rich, substantial stout with notes of fudge and toffee alongside muted roast tones and a velvety, lightly sweet smoothness.

Can from Urbansprawl. Brownish black with a medium tan head. Aroma is chocolate malt. Flavour is spicy dark chocolate, warm fruity malt, boozy burn on a long spicy imperial finish.

Imperial stout by this Carlsberg-owned Swedish brewery, 75 bottle with crown cap from a Systembolaget in Stockholm, shared with Goedele. Thick, yellowish pale beige, moussy, stable head lacing in 'plaques' over a blackish bronze beer, still translucent (completely) under bright light, with coppery edges. Aroma of Ersatz chocolate (strong), butterscotch, old chocolate cake, fig jam, brown rum, liquorice, hazelnuts, Irish coffee, very light iron. Sweet onset, stewed red apple, ripe blue plum and a dash of banana mixed with an underlying, subtle sourishness; softly prickling carbonation, smooth, full and remarkably creamy, rather than the expected oily, mouthfeel. Very toffeeish malt sweet body, very reminiscent of Ersatz chocolate, a flavour which weirdly dominates this beer from onset to finish; some end bitterness due to a light toasty malt accent as well as a touch of herbal, tea-ish hops, followed by glowing, rum-like alcohol, yet in a gentle, non-astringent manner. Unusual beer: lacks the black 'inkiness' and viscosity of a true imperial stout, certainly to today's standards, with a feeble Ersatz chocolate flavour dominating; almost quad-like with a stout-ish twist, like the imperial stout produced by the Spencer trappist monks in the United States. Very accessible, non-roasty, creamy, chocolatey 'stout', one for the greater masses I suppose, but strangely very enjoyable at the same time, with a good balance of flavours and interesting Ersatz chocolate main flavour profile.

On tap at the brewpub. Thick malty viscous beginning. Intense malty with roasted brown sugar. The used Palm-Sugar is there, moderate bitterness, malty with not not much sweetness. Intense malty roasted sticky sweetish aftertaste. Great stuff!!

(Draught at Stockholm Beer Festival, 26 Sep 2014) Dark brown colour with frothy, beige head. Malty, hoppy nose with dark bread, chocolate and pine needles. Malty, hoppy taste with notes of coffee, chocolate, black rye bread, pine needles and grapefruit. Generous piney bitterness in the finish. More than medium body, with a fairly sharp malt profile. A touch of sweetness. Quite tasty, more like a black IPA than a stout. Nice one.
