Shaun and Nico have to break out of Alcatraz. And fast. The Hop Syndicate is hoarding hops, depriving the people of their right to hoppy, aromatic beer. Join Shaun and Nico on their adventure to Free the Hops! First, they plan a daring escape through the sewer pipe, then they surf monster waves on ironing boards, and finally they attempt a high speed cable car getaway.

Hop Crisis. Crisis? What Crisis? A few years ago, when hop prices shot through the roof and the worldwide hop market went into a tailspin, at our pub in San Francisco we decided there was only one thing for us to do. We made the biggest, hoppiest IPA we could imagine and aged it on oak for good measure. This ImperialIPA breaks all the rules with more malt, more hops and more aroma.

4 oz draft part of a flight at 21st Amendment’s brewpub. Clear light golden yellow with off-white head. Aromas of caramel, citrus, tropical fruit, floral notes. Tastes of sweet malt, tropical fruit, citrus, caramel, floral hops. Medium body with a dry finish. Not bad.

Can, courtesy of coldbrewky, big thank you Steve. Orange golden color with thick white head. Strong citrus hoppy aroma with malt in background. Taste, solid malty base, followed with nice hoppy kick, grapefruits, tangerines, orange zest, tropical fruits, pines, wood. Long mellow hoppy bitter finish. Alcohol is very dangerously hidden. Very nice.

Another nice one from 21st Amendment. Big hop notes in the aroma, grapefruit, some resin, some burnt flavors possibly due to the can being on the shelf a little too long. Still delicious IIPA

Can on the train from Inverness to Plockton, 19/10/13, thanks to TR. Clear golden with a good sized off white head. Nose is caramel malt forward, hops, toasty malts, pine resin, bitter citrics, light grpaefruit tones. Taste comprises caramel malt, bitter orange, toasty, candied sugars, tropicals, boozey notes. Full bodied, fine carbonation, malty finale with semi agressive hop bitterness. Decent enough DIPA but some way from top of class.

12 oz. can from Julio’s. Golden-orange in color with a medium foamy off-white head that receded slowly. Flavor is grassy hops, and then light old citrus notes with some light vanilla oak woodiness. The wood notes really tone down the hops. Bitterness is only lingering moderately after the sip. Medium body with slight warming after the sip. Alcohol is very well hidden. I wish I could taste this fresh since the can in front of me is over 2 months old. Would love to sample this on draft. Well worth a try.

Hazy orange-tan. Fluffy, steady off-white head. Bitter and resinous, bold full bodied IIPA. Rich and big, almost like a big Belgian ale sometimes, with the grassy bitter hops and massive malt tones. The oak is minimal, not like a barrel would impart. A nice beer, a little bit light malt profile than most IIPAs. OK, classic in most respects.

On tap at 21st Amendment. A finger thick white head sits on top of an unclear golden body. The aroma has some sweetish notes, but is mostly on the peachy, grassy and tropical fruity side. Pine cone notes too. Some alcohol notes in the mouth, full body and pleasant, soft carbonation. Sweet flavor with a good bitterness. Pine cones, peaches and orange peel too. Bitter, fruity and a tad sweet finish that lasts. Overall, too sweet, but also nice. 130805
