Shaun and Nico have to break out of Alcatraz. And fast. The Hop Syndicate is hoarding hops, depriving the people of their right to hoppy, aromatic beer. Join Shaun and Nico on their adventure to Free the Hops! First, they plan a daring escape through the sewer pipe, then they surf monster waves on ironing boards, and finally they attempt a high speed cable car getaway.
Hop Crisis. Crisis? What Crisis? A few years ago, when hop prices shot through the roof and the worldwide hop market went into a tailspin, at our pub in San Francisco we decided there was only one thing for us to do. We made the biggest, hoppiest IPA we could imagine and aged it on oak for good measure. This ImperialIPA breaks all the rules with more malt, more hops and more aroma.

12 oz can from a four pack. Pours hazy golden with a large cream-colored head with excellent retention; leaves curtains of lace after it finally recedes. Aroma is doughy, piney, grapefruit. Taste is candy sweet (not cloying), floral, pineapple and lightly oaky; finishes with a restrained bitterness. For this style and a can proclaiming it to be the hoppiest beer on the planet, it’s restrained that is. Really interesting and divergent flavor from your average DIPA.

Canned 355ml. -Shiny yellow/orange coloured, medium sized creamy white head that went away nowhere, lively carbonation, fruity hoppy nose. Moderate sweet malty, hoppy and grapefruity with intensive bitter finish. Also touch of honey in the finish. Quite nice but expected maybe something more.

Can. Pours hazy golden yellow with a small white head and some lacing. Aroma is citrus and pine with some woody notes. Flavor is about the same; obvious oak notes from the aging a plus. Body is medium, mouthfeel is creamy. Pretty nice.

Can from Elizabeth Station, Bellingham, WA
"Ale aged on oak spirals"
Hazy golden color, with small head. Moderate aroma of fruity hops, some toffee and some iodine. Correct body strength, the mouthfeel is lean for this size, with moderate sweetness and no crystal malt; good flavor of caramel and toffee, with strong bitterness, and also strong resiny presence; some fruits from the hop too; the final is also vaguely piney.
Balanced, very good.

Can at Hell’s Kitchen, Norfolk, VA. Hazy medium orange body, thin, clumping off-white head. Citrusy nose with oxidized-smelling hops, orange peel, and bready malts. Somewhat harsh, thin body, with lots of sweet juicy citrus (primarily orange pulp and peel), bready malts, and prickly, warming alcohol. A bit over-the-top but mostly enjoyable.

Location: 12 oz can from State Line, 11/5/12
Aroma: The nose is pretty hoppy, with some peach/grapefruit, along with a little resin and pine
Appearance: It pours a cloudy orange color with an inch or 2 of foamy off-white head and spotty lace
Flavor: Tastes a little bit sweet, with a big citrus hop presence, and a medium-plus hop bitterness
Palate: The body is medium, it feels a little creamy, lightly sticky, with a soft carbonation, and a dry finish
Overall Impression: This is a very solid citrus fruit IIPA for sure. I enjoyed it quite a bit. I really didn't taste any oak aging at all, but for a citrus hop beer it is quite good.

Not expecting many manners. From a can. Oily dull hop aroma. Nice pour and head. Looks daringly enticing. Big mouthful of resinous hops galore, wew. Nasty nellie being pulled thru the dirt with a rototiller. Finish is like a weed wacker mowing down spruce shrubs. Did I erroniously pick up a can of handsoap? Terribly on style.
