Join Shaun and Nico on their adventure to Free the Hops! First, they plan a daring escape through the sewer pipe, then they surf monster waves on ironing boards, and finally they attempt a high speed cable car getaway.
Hop Crisis. Crisis? What Crisis? A few years ago, when hop prices shot through the roof and the worldwide hop market went into a tailspin, at our pub in San Francisco we decided there was only one thing for us to do. We made the biggest, hoppiest IPA we could imagine and aged it on oak for good measure. This ImperialIPA breaks all the rules with more malt, more hops and more aroma.

This is one of the good ones! Pours a nice golden yellow. Strong hop aroma and flavor, with citrus and pine bite. Nice combo of hop and malt flavors gives this a clean mouthfeel and finish. Very good stuff.

Can@Oliver Twist, Stockholm (old backlog). Goldeny orange colour with a mediumsized white head. Aroma is big time fruity and floral notes with some caramel and mild grainy notes. Overall quite sweet. Flavour is sweet malts, mild fruity and floral hoppyness along with some honey, grass and mild tropical fruit juice. Mild spicy and herbal notes in the finish as well.

Can from Half Time. Pours hazy light amber with a slight off-white head. Floral/citrus for aroma. Med body. Flavor is citrus, perfumey floral over nice light caramel backbone. Very floral. Incredibly hoppy without harshness or super bitterness. It’s just very hoppy and very bitter. Incredible amounts of hop. Excellent.

Clear honey golden coloured body with a bit of a copper and orange glow and a very thick off-white head with some pretty ugly lacing. Aroma of tons of alcohol, a bunch of fresh hops, grapefruit, pine, apricots and a deep, cloying smell that shows a lot of character - even in the nose. Full-bodied; Pungent hop flavour at first with a bit of candy sugar, apricots, alcohol then finally showing a good heavy dose of grapefruit and piney notes at the end. Aftertaste shows a lot of alcohol, a ton of malt and body, a bit of an earthy and toffee sweetness and finally, a strong prolonged bitterness from the hops at the end. Overall, a nice imperial ipa that focuses mostly on the hops, then on the malt - so it really is an IPA, not a slightly hopped american strong...this one has the order the right way, plus its in a small format size, and it’s a can! I sampled this twelve ounce can purchased from Total Wine in Alexandria, Virginia on 20-July-2011 received in store on my birthday, 30-June-2011 sampled at home in Washington on 13-November-2011.

Can from Whole Foods Market Bowery, New York, NY. A golden/orange coloured pour with a small white on top. Hoppy, citrus fruit aroma. Tastes hoppy, malty, grapefruit, bitter/sweet, really quite bitter for me. Still a quality brew which I would drink again.

Can. Aroma of oak, butter, honey, grassy hop, menthol. Sweet honey flavor with menthol, slightly prickly hops. Smooth and full, nicely founded. Interesting and soft.

Can sample at a tasting. Thanks David’s friend! Clear golden-orange with a white foam. Hoppy aroma with pine needles, some malt and resinous notes. Flavor starts sweetish with a bit of malt and continues bitter and resinous. Medium-bodied.

Can at Leighton’s Aug 11 tasting. It pours clear golden yellow, with a thick, fluffy white head. The nose is lemon Cif, fresh pine, starch and white sugar. The taste is white sugar, hay, straw, resin, pine, grass, starch, metal, lemon, grapefruit and honey, with a long light bitter finish. Medium body and harsh carbonation. Decent.

(Can, Oliver Twist, Stockholm) Golden amber colour with frothy, off-white head. Hoppy, fruity nose with notes of grapefruit, pine needles, resin and lots of fresh, citric hops. Hoppy, fruity, malty taste with citrus, caramel, dried apricots, grapefruit, pine needles and a smooth, hoppy finish with caramel, vanilla, citric hops and hints of oak wood. Almost full body, with some sweetness. Impressive hop character, with the oak wood firmly in the background. Lovely beer.
