A few years ago, when hop prices shot through the roof and the worldwide hop market went into a tailspin, at our pub in San Francisco we decided there was only one thing for us to do. We made the biggest, hoppiest IPA we could imagine and aged it on oak for good measure. This ImperialIPA breaks all the rules with more malt, more hops and more aroma.

Can thanks to Baker. Pour a clear deep amber with an off-white head that dissipates to the edges and laces nicely. Aroma is full of sweet grains with a bit of pine hop and a good amount of oak that keeps the pine mellow. Flavor starts with sweet grains but transitions to oak, pine and a bit of resin in the finish. Barrel aging took away too much of the hops IMO, but still solid.

Can at a tasting. Pours clear gold with a delicate, white head. Fresh pine aroma, some sugar. Very sweet flavor, some honey and light caramel, ripe citrus. Medium to full in body with average carbonation. Sticky finish, oil, resinous, more nice pine, faint dirt. Great beer.

Canned at Oliver Twist, Stockholm. Clear deep golden, faint head. Rich lychee aroma. Sweet and marmelady with near full body and clean, rounded mouthfeel. Hugely hoppy with tangerine, lychee and seville orange. Really bitter finish. Hugely citric, but the oak is not noticed - which is probably good as oak and citric hops is a match made in hell.

Can at Oliver Twist. Clear amber/golden liquid with medium off-white head. Aroma is hoppy with notes of pine, citrus, caramel, toffee, vanilla, oak and coconut. The notes from the oak aging aren’t overpowering and works well with the rest of the aroma. Taste is dry, light sweet and highly bitter with notes of fresh, fruity hops. Medium bodied with ok carbonation. Really tasty, most balanced oak aged IPA I’ve had.

Can. Pours golden with a white head. Fruity, sweet aroma. Lots of citrus-like notes. Nicely balanced taste. Sweet fruity notes, some serious bitterness and just enough oak notes to make it something special (without getting too oaky).

12 ounce can from Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA, opened 7/1/11. Pours a clear golden color with a large frothy white head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of floral and citrus hops with some resiny notes. The taste is very bitter hops. Resiny, citrus and grape notes. Peppery wood as well. Medium bodied. Interesting.

12 ounce can into tulip, interesting can design with inscriptions haha. Pours crystal clear light orange amber color with a dense 2 finger off white head with great retention that reduces to a thick lacing cap. Thick lacing sticks to the glass as well. Aromas of big grapefruit, pine, caramel, pineapple, and pine. Big sweetness in the aromas, with little spiciness from hops. Taste of tons of orange, pine, orange zest, caramel, oak, and a bit of spiciness. Big sweetness up front with a decent amount of bitterness on the finish, but not as much as I was expecting. Some lingering bitterness on the finish with citrus and pine notes. Much more malt forward DIPA here. Low-medium carbonation and medium-full bodied with a bit of a sticky and slick mouthfeel. No alcohol noticed at all surprisingly. Overall, a damn nice DIPA, with easy drinkability and all around good flavor.

Tin. Orange poor with thin white head. Moderate lacing. Citrusy aroma, not as full as one would expect in a DIPA, but pleasant. Full flavoured, floral notes, Blood orange notes in the finish. Doesn’t tast as strong as it is.

12 oz. can, split with Matts_Property, pours a relatively clean golden with a white head. Aroma of resinous hops, some pine and heaps of caramel, sort of a syrupy, vanilla, oaky quality. Flavour of resinous hops, somewhat muted by the oak barrels, with a little vanilla and caramel. Bittersweet finish. Very enjoyable though perhaps lacking in some depth / complexity.
