A few years ago, when hop prices shot through the roof and the worldwide hop market went into a tailspin, at our pub in San Francisco we decided there was only one thing for us to do. We made the biggest, hoppiest IPA we could imagine and aged it on oak for good measure. This ImperialIPA breaks all the rules with more malt, more hops and more aroma.

Can. Pours a thickish looking orange/copper with a bit of head and aromas of sticky honey, orange blossom and sweetness. Flavor is similarly sticky and sweet with a nice hops balance, but the hops don’t quite pull enough against the underattenuated (?) malt. It sits all sticky on the tongue and finishes sweet.

Can: Awesome aroma of pineapple, grapefruit, and thistle. Clear amber, thick yellow head, little retention, lacing is good. Full body. Thistle and honey flavor. Not very dynamic, but wow, what a delicious beer!

can thanks to Tytoanderso, pours gold with a thin white head. Aroma is big citrus and tropical fruit notes of pineapple, mango and grapefruit. Flavor is toasted malts that only linger for a bit before being cut by a huge hop profile that again mimics the aroma with tropical fruits and citrus rind. Ends with a lingering orange note. Alcohol is very well masked, this is dangerous stuff.

12oz can. Poured an amber color with a large 3-finger white head. Aroma was heavy on grapefruit, but not really overly citrus. Notes of oak, hops. Flavor was hoppy, oaky, notes of vanilla. Pretty darn solid.

Whole Foods Market, DC 4-pack ($11): Orangeish color with a quickly dissipating white head that leaves a thin layer of lacing. Aroma is trees, citrus hops, caramel, cake, and a couple more hops. This is not an extreme IIPA. It is well-balanced with the malts and the hops. Though the hops come out in good force around the middle with plenty astringency. Has some tastes that remind me of seeds.The real unique and interesting quality here is the oak again, which I think was done exceptionally well. Complex beer and plenty interesting to drink. A little sweet. Easy-drinking.

Pours clear, deep gold into a Sam glass. White head meringues and recedes leaving spider lacing. Sweet resin aromas. Thick with caramel, resin, and sweet citrus front to back. Lasting oaked resin finish.

Sample at Ale Wine & Spirits in Powell on 06/17/2011. The beer is a golden-orange color with a medium foamy off-white head that recedes slowly. Sticky rings of lacing. Aroma of piney hops, citrus and malt. Medium body with flavors of hops, grapefruit and biscuity malt. The finish is hoppy with a lingering citrus aftertaste. Pretty good all around.

Golden with a high white head. Powerful tropical fruits, citrus, and some sweet, chewy malts. Lingering heavy bitterness. Medium bodied. Burns a little on the finish. Real nice DIPA. (draught at the brewpub)

On tap. Pours with a hazed golden body and a large white head that leaves great lace. Aromas are extremely floral and fruity with vanilla, oak, and a green quality to it. Taste is earthy, vanilla, tannins, fruity, strawberry, mango and papaya. Noticeable alcohol. Good.

On Tap at Brewforia Beer Market, Meridian, ID Hazy golden orange witha dense creamy long lasting head, leaving hevy sheets of lacing on the glass. Huge fresh citrusy hop aroma and a TON of fresh up front hop flavor. Tangerines, orange zest, some grapefruit..just awsome. Moderate bitterness, which is the opposite of many IPAs and even Doubles. This is what I hope for on IPAs. Delicious. At 10%+ it is hard to have more than a couple and remember how good they were though.
