Surreal spontaneous sour ale aged in oak barrels
Spontaneously fermented in oak barrels, L'Brett d'Or's fermentation is kicked off with the help of the natural wild yeasts and bacteria residing around our coolship and native to our brewery. Since our spontaneous beers can only be brewed during the winter months, individual releases involve blending unique barrels to bring out the best of each brewing season. Characterized by funky citrus aromas, a crisp acidic bite, and a complex finish, L'Brett d'Or will continue to age with the best of them, gaining in complexity over the years.

On tap at Elizabeth Station, pours a hazy blonde with a small white head. Aroma brings out lots of brett upfront, some feet, and some herbal notes. Flavour is very tart and acidic, with intense ascorbic notes, lofs of tartness and subdued brett character. Harsh and difficult to drink. This one is not doing it for me.

Draught at Armsby Abbey, 10/6/16, as the "Dry Hop" version (don’t recall which hops).
Very bright, maize-golden, with light haze and a medium-sized, white head atop showing moderate retention.
Very strong citrus rind in the nose, with even some lemongrass and unripe pineapple/nectarine notes. Light vanilla, cracker and strong perfume element to it. Somewhat sharp and grainy, as seems to be characteristic of the brewery. No alcohol and no off-notes, but just very intensely citric with no real softness, funk or balance.
In the mouth, it’s even more given to this heavy lemon character. Biting lemon rind, mixes with dominant lemon oil notes and there’s no real respite from it in the form of supple malt or tannin or anything. Grainy, rather thin, very dry and nearly astringent on the finish with low complexity and lots of tartness. Crooked Stave continues to incredibly underwhelm....

Tap at the Source. Lemon, some passion fruit, herbs, grapefruit in the nose. Great aroma. flavor too is great, like a sour Sprite. good citrus hop flavors, nice tarness, bit more complex than the petite series.

Sampled from tap at ’Beertemple’ during Carnivale Brettanomyces 2016 as ’L’Brett d’Or Dry Hop’. Slightly hazy, straw yellow with a white head. Sourish, very fruity and a little funky aroma of lemon, gooseberry, passion fruit, some oak and a bit of wheat. Very sour, fruity and a little funky taste of lemon, gooseberry, passion fruit, some rhubarb, wheat and some oak, followed by a medium long, rather tart and dry finish. Thin to medium body, very astringent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Nice, but again very simple.
