Dark brown/black colour, thin layer of beige foam. Nose of coffee, roasted malts, also some fruity berry hints, light smoky notes. Easy drinkable, soft carbonation.

Il y avait de l'idée dans cet Optimo intégrant du malt à Whisky. Mais elle perd dans trop de sens à fois pour être aboutie et même équilibrée. Entre arômes de café et de chocolat d'un stout, de l'acidité, des notes fruités de poire et raisin mais également un alcool à 8 % bien présent, il y a de quoi être désorienté. En verre nous sommes sur un brun foncé (EBC de 206) surmonté d'une mousse brune crémeuse de 1,5 cm. Le nez est sur le chocolat, la tourbe, la poire, le raisin avec un léger café. Pas désagréable avec des arômes tourbés intéressants. La dégustation présente cependant des arômes moins stables avec une effervescence trop poussée mais surtout une acidité mal venue. Les arômes tourbés sont moins présents qu'au nez, mais des épices prennent place avec poivre et coriandre en compagnie de café, d'herbes et de chocolat. En deuxième bouche l'alcool se renforce sur des airs de genièvre avec des arômes fruités de poire et raisin plus présents. L'amertume reste modérée avec 36 d'EBU mais une fraîcheur appuyée par l'acidité est bien présente. L’arrière-bouche, plus acide manque cruellement d'intérêt avant un final où le café, la tourbe et l'alcool dominent. Corpulence et longueur restent modérées. Pas convaincant.

One of Oude Maalderij's older beers, a smoked stout, now with new label like the other ones in this trio of loosely religiously themed stouts. Bottle at Estaminet De Brouwerij. Pale greyish white, irregular, bubbly head lacing in streaks over a hazy, very dark chestnut brown beer, almost blackish but still translucent with a bronze hue. Aroma of dried plums, walnuts, wet toast, elderberries, damp earth and even forest floor, coffee grounds, hint of gravy and indeed a whiff of burnt wood or charcoal, but not the smoked bacon effect of smoked malt I was expecting (and hoping for). Sweetish onset, dried figs and old raisins, medium carbonated (a bit minerally), light beef stock-ish umami touch and underlying sourishness; smooth, somewhat resinous mouthfeel. Caramelly and toasted nut-like malt bittersweetishness, again with only a very, very subtle hint at smokiness, more in a burnt wood-like way than smoked meat; roasty coffeeish bitterness is more pronounced in the finish, as well as a herbal, somewhat spicy hop bitter touch and damp leaf-like yeast earthiness. Lingering caramel flavours too, as well as a dash of warming, 'jenever'-ish alcohol, but well-positioned. A bit crude and earthy for the intended style, but more importantly: why is this advertized as a smoked beer while the smoke remains nothing more than a background accent? Perhaps to reach a potentially larger audience, but I would not have minded full-fledged smokiness here. Still, a correct and enjoyable offering for sure.

Fles thuis geprobeerd. Het is een donker bruin bier met een volle schuimkraag. Het heeft een rokerige geur. De smaak is rokerig en wat zoet. Beetje alsof je een asbak leeg eet.

Zwart bier met veel schuim wat direct omhoog komt. Smaak is zoet en krachtig met iets van koffie, karamel, licht rook invloed en toffee.

Bottle shared at Belgian Chimipalooza, thanks! Very hazy brown with a small tan head. Aroma of caramel, overripe dark fruits, light veggies and yeast. Flavour is moderate sweet and bitter. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Bottle @ weekly tasting shared with Thompson. Hazy dark brown color, a slight dark red glare coming through when held into the light, medium sized foamy beige to light brown head. Aroma is malts, lightly peat, lightly smoke, leather, tar, iodine, but also lightly vegetal. Taste malts, again lightly peat, tar, iodine, light to average bitterness. Decent body and carbonation. Not my kind of beer.
